Palm seeds will germinate in one of two ways, Adjacent or Remote Germination.

In Adjacent Germination, the seedling axis develops adjacent to the seed.
The Cotyledon will grow out a small ways, forming a “Button”
From this, the seedling stem will form, ( Plumule) and Adventitious roots will develop.
( Adventitious roots are the true roots of a Palm, they form at the root initiation zone located at the bottom of the stem – sometimes this zone does extend higher, as in the case of the stilt root palms )

Occasionally, seedling roots, ( Radicles ), are produced in adjacent germinations, these are generally short lived and soon replaced by Adventitious roots.

With Remote Germination, The seedling axis develops remotely from the seed.
( With Bismarckia nobilis and others, this can be up to a 12” distance )

The first structure to emerge from the seed is the Cotyledonary petiole, this grows down into the soil and forms a “ Bulge”, from here is where the seedling stem, ( Plumule), and seedling root, ( Radicle ), will form. With remote germination, the Radicle will persist for some time, often supplementing Adventitious root growth.

Most interesting, Steve.
Great pics.

Referring to the pic for adjacent germination, my Medjools didn't form a button on the radicle 😕 I'm not sure
if that's now happening in the soil since they were planted?? I'm sure they're not Remote germinators.

I think Jay's going to have to give us a Reference forum 🙂 for really valuable info like this.

"12 inches from the stem"...no wonder you used a 5 gallon pot for your Bizzie seedlings. 😯

Hi Barb!

Phoenix's are remote germinators, from the ones I have grown, they will go down about 3" - 4" before they start growing upwards.

I finally figured out how to add text to photos! and just finding way to pass the time till Spring 😆

Steve
OK now I've got it...thanks (again) 😳

And I WAS going to mention that text addition...
Presume text is performed in your photo editor?
Thanks!

I have been trying out the Gimp ( GNU Image Manipulation Program )

This is freely distributed software for image authoring, photo retouching, etc

http://www.gimp.org/

Taking me a while to learn 😀 but it does have some nice features.

I think I goofed with the Medjools then.
Thinking they're "adjacent" and thinking it was a radicle instead of a cotyledonary petiole, I gently placed
the "thingy" straight down into the soil.

Should I have planted more sideways so that the "thingy" goes out sideways before it heads into the soil?
And if so, should I gently rearrange them now?

Damn...I should've paid more attention!
🙁 Barb

Barb,
You potted them up correctly 8)
It all depends on the seeds orientation when it germinates, some grow straight down, some will grow horizontally a ways and then downward. They will pretty much take care of themselves 😀
