Nypa fruticans

This is a species of Palm that can be dated back 60 - 70 million years in the fossil record.

Nypa can be grown in a container, but it's true home is in the water.

These actually float , some will have already germinated before being released into the water.

And here they are in an environment that will hopefully allow them to prosper

Would the method of under water like these work for Alocasia & Colocasia?? If so, would I put soil in the pots or just tiny rocks?

If they can be grown aquatically, this method, (plus many others), will work.

I'm using the Schultz brand aquatic soil, It is a pelletized clay that doesn't cloud the water.

Thanks! Most of these will have germinated by the time they drop, so I was able to get a couple that were already on their way

Thanks Dean, not really sure what happened. Both were received at the same time and placed side by side under identical conditions.
When received , one tended to float while the other sank, in the end, the one that was still buoyant eventually declined. Maybe I potted that one up too early?
There just isn't much information on growing these out there..........But I am happy to have one going

I had completely forgotten that you had two Nypa growing in water in your GH !!!!

This is a fantastic and fantastic-looking species with a tropical but wild and primitive demeanor.
It creates a true 'jungle' aspect like no other species can when planted around ponds or small
lakes. Fortunate is the gardener who has room to grow it. It would only succeed in a large
conservatory or atrium that has full or nearly full sun exposure, an area wide enough, and a soil
deep enough to accommodate the thick trunks.
States adapable only to zones 10b and 11, and that it's fast growing.

When your pond gets to thick of these palms and need thinning out look no further!!!LOL
Or you have too many seeds,and you just don't know what to do with them all!!!!
Keeping warm up there in the far north???
Looks like might get some 50 to 60* weather this weekend,I'm hoping!!

I also see you have aquarium heater in your pond,what temp are you keeping?
In one of my books on palms,by Martin Gibbons,hr writes these are extremely difficult to germinate outside there natural habitat,and if they do germinate,most likely will shortly afterwards.
Steve,looks like you picked a rather hard palm to grow,but you seem to have one going good,so congrats to you my friend!

Have some Manicaria & Salacca hopefully germinating, so maybe that one will have some company soon

Don, With 40 gallons total, I have two 200W heaters keeping it about 68*F. Thanks for the comments, sounds like everyone got new Palm reference books for Christmas. ( except me, maybe next year....lol

This one made it through the Winter in the green house

( trying too keep 40+ gallons of circulating water above 50*F all Winter is not as easy as it would seem )

This one has a new friend now too to keep it company, Salacca wallichiana

(or bigger if I can work it into the budget)

Hey Steve,
well lost a few things,but that is to be expected,I guess learned a lesson on plants on the floor,get them off the floor,I though the rubber flooring would keep things warmer than just dirt floor,but now I think I need to but a wood floor in the north greenhouse. 125 gallon sounds great!!!,is this for outside only or you going to have it inside the greenhouse?
Yep about a couple more weeks,I'll start bring out some palms and bananas.
Did you lose anything planted in the ground?
All my washy's and one T.Waggie had spear pull,they all were doing good until that last cold spell that fell down to zero.
Well still got some watering to do.

Don,
Had the flu and some complications this month, I unplugged the one enclosure and forgot to plug it back in....... things ended up a little toasted.

The robusta is already pushing a new spear, so no real damage

I'm hoping to get the green house expanded this year, with the pond right in the middle of the new section, and a 12' roof.
(at least that is the plan, hopefully nature will cooperate this season)

Well looks like spring weather is coming,so hopefully will give you some time before it gets to hot outside to work,sorry to hear about the flu,had a few days myself that things weren't feeling so good.
Yep,nothing to worry about,since it's pushing a new spear,I have a few on the inside with some burnt dead leaves,but there still pushing new ones,so week after next I'll push a few outside,and get these season off to a new start.
Don't forget to show pics of your greenhouse project,everybody here is interested in your progress!!!

Glad your stuff got through relatively unscathed.
I too would think a rubber floor was a good insulator against cold from the ground up.

Steve, that Nypa has grown beautifully, not a mark on it. Congrats.
That young Salacca's color is very attractive.

Sure you've got space left (ahem...

),
I'll never tire looking at those pics.
you've even got strapping to keep the pots on the shelves.

I also look forward to seeing the construction pics...as close as I'll get to having a GH.

Some of these seeds were as big as pecans,so it might take some time,been almost 3 months and nothing yet!
Neovetchi Starkii,black crown palm,and Dypsis Orange crush,Dypsis Fine leaf,this palm supposedly is so new hasn't been officially named yet, 2 kinds of Pindos,3 different kinds of sabal.Licuala Orbicularis,Travelers Palm,and just planted a few Queen palms as well,and have more seeds coming too!
Should be exciting if some of these pop,I love the challenge of just growing them on!!!!

What a selection of seeds, great, Don!

I'm with you on the waiting thingy...I'm at about 4-something months for Bizzie nobilis, Copernicia hospita, Brahea armata, and something-or-other-Super-Silver...
And I'm at 5+ months for Dypsis decaryii...

And like an idiot, I just ordered seeds of C. debaoensis and C. panzhi.
I hate the waiting.
We should farm out our germination work to Steve...

Well.... I don't post photos of the seeds I've been waiting on over a year or two

I put most of my efforts into finding fresh seed, with that, most will germinate within a month or two.

Here's a photo of that enclosure with everything trimmed, with all this robusta has been through the last couple years, I'm amazed it's still going

(the aloe has also started to bloom)
