Crazy Assed banana plants in New Jersey
Moderators: Laaz, lucky1, Alchris, Kansas, Wes North Van
Hi Mike,
Im from Somerset, NJ, about 90 minutes from you. Your banana trees and garden are amazing! So beautiful! I'd love to do that in my yard someday (currently in an apartment so I cant). Love to hear the details about how you did that! Would love to see that garden in person, if its not too late this year.
I once lived in Easton, PA and had a windmill palm growing in my yard for about 3 years. I did protect it in the winter and it grew on the southern sunny side of my house. I want to do that again too. Do you have any windmill palms in your yard? Are you in zone 7b or 7a?
Geoff

Welcome aboard PN, Geoff.
Mike will be a great resource for you, living so close by.
His yard was stunning this summer.
If you've had a windmill palm before, you're ready for more

Nice to hear form you Geoff. I do have 2 windmills in the front of the house. They're doing very well. Still haven't had a frost here so the bananas are still pushing out leaves too, just really wind damaged form last week's storms. I expect we will have a frost or freeze in the upcoming two weeks or so...???gbuchman wrote:Hi Mike,

Mike,
The nanners are so big they make the garden shed look tiny...like a doghouse
Sure love those concrete pavers with the grass between, great job on design.
Great welcome for the trick-and-treaters!

Thanks Barb, long time no talk. hope you are well. Summer has been so busy with the new shore house that I have hardly been on. Things will slow down soon I think. Although ti has been pretty mild still, no frost or freeze yet, will come soon though. I plan to lug the giant queen palms into the upstairs master bedroom this weekend, ugh! light a candle for me....lucky1 wrote:Mike,

Glad you enjoyed your beach house this summer.
Bet you've got plans for a few nanners there too.

very pissed off, one of my tallest bananas in the front gardens have fruited and the flower is huge!!!! I was hoping the four that fruited would have been the only ones. but another one bites the dust, and so late in the season, almost a waste since it will frreeze in the next week or so....DEVIL!

YES THE MONSTERS ARE IN!!!!
just brought them in tonight, we didn't attempt to get them all the way long staircase with the quarter landing, too many steps, and too much to get them all the way up there, we actually reworked some of the family room furniture to accomodate them. i measured them when they were lying sideways 12. 5 feet tall approximately and heavy as balls! i would have probably left mine (balls) on the floor had i tried to get them up there
here are a few pics in their new indoor family room home....

You're right, Mike, that would've been a fabulous flower on the nanner.
Great photos of the Queens in their new spot.
Sheesh, I would've put 'em there years ago.
You can even replace those wall light bulbs with full spectrum grow lites.
Those Queens will be sooooo happy.
Probably want to stay there in summer too.
Saves your balls...
