Post by sidpook » Sun Apr 15, 2012 1:48 pm

Could someone please help me to do a Banana ID. i bought it last fall at a supermarket and it had no tag. It has grown about a foot and has many leaves coming out in all directions . Really like it, just not sure what it is?? Could it possibly be a Dwarf Cavendish?? Thanks!!

To quote "Little Vicky" from the simpsons... " Im ever so pissed".

Unfortunately theres nothing I can do now. Protected what I could this morning (probably to late for spring clematis blooms). More then likely killed of all the seedlings. Even the new yarrow growth looks toast....

The trunks look like Ensete, but the leaves look like musa..........

Again, if we fail here, try bananas.org.

SEXY

THe scale in the top pic makes em look 12 feet tall, i guess that threw me off lol.

They may actually be hardy there with some good mulch. They sucker like MAD apparently as well. One of the very few "bananas" i can manage to grow from seed. Mines tiny, and looks like hell after being inside for the winter. They must NEED a good dormant period. Make sure the soil is really good, and well draining so it doesnt rot in the winter (like the basjoo).

Take some pics when theyre planted !!

That second one is definately Ensete lasiocarpa. I think the genus was changed from Musella a few years ago. There's a red flowering version, but I have never seen one offered for sale. They are really good looking plants and mine seem to grow faster than my basjoos. They winter in leaf cages just like basjoos as well.
