Barb I`m thinking these seeds would be a valuable addition to the Trachycarpus gene pool. My Trachy flowering now has seen temps of near it`s cold hardy limits -17c -17.8c -17.3c last three years. I think we could probably give the seeds away to anybody on this board knowing they are from cold hardy zone 6 survivor stock. I love this hobby! Here is an update on my inflorescents and a couple of my newly planted T.nainital. Scroll through the 8 pics. By the way the bananas in the wideview pics are from the Basjoo you gave me last year. I separated seven pups from the mom. When we come up for a visit I`ll bring you a couple back home. Sorry to hijack your post.

OK, I'm convinced though mine hasn't seen tough conditions.these seeds would be a valuable addition to the Trachycarpus gene pool.
Unless we include being in a garbage bucket for eons
Yes, we'll give seeds to anyone on PN.
But I'm still worried that mine is so late to bloom...the bugger still hasn't opened up yet, so it's likely a female, because Wes says his males always bloom early, waiting for the females to open.
But it's growing a handle.
Sounds like the dating service is alive and well.
Your pics are fabulous John.
Nice looking great colour on the new NainiTals.
What a feature that planted bed is!
Seven pups?
Don't you dare bring a banana back
They get so shredded here in our winds...that's why I gave it to you.
By the end of every summer it looks like a flag pole after a war
Thanks for the great pics.

No bananas no prob. I have a few 5 gal.Sabal minor and Sabal louisiana and some T. nainital. You could plant a couple or more under that Trachy that`s on a 30 year old growth spurt. I don`t think they would interfere with the existing palm hut until your Trachy outgrows the hut next year We`ve got to bring something for our annual visit?

Jim, my May 23 post is the latest pic.
Still hasn't opened inflorescence
John, very kind of you to offer more palms/nanas, but just bring me some warm weather.
I'd be very happy with that.
If I stick one more palm into the confined space of that palm hut, the carpenter will quit
Or he'd have to lose about 60 pounds...

Will check for fragrance once they open.
Female, huh?
Seems there's a shortage of males around.
Just like at high school dances.

That's better weather than -9999, Mike
Let's just bet "for the hell of it".
I'll bet mine is a male (fat chance, huh?)
And if, by chance, my Trachy and John's "have a date", I think it's safe to say you'll get seeds (and a cigar).

Update:
I don't know how something as exciting as a Trachy beginning to flower can look so downright yucky and ugly:
Hint of green inside, so probably a female.

Mike,
Is trachy pollen like some cycad pollen in that it's "viable" for about 2 weeks only?
Kinda like phoning the sperm bank too late

Barb with the male flower stalk I`m sending you it will be the fall when the seeds are ready. I could always send it UPS or Fed. Express, very cheap to Vernon. Yours looks like a female after looking at some here of a large male and female side by side. I`ll wrap it in wet paper towels around the base of the cut so it will be fresh when you get it. Cameron will get the first seeds sent out from our batch. I don`t have any seedlings anymore so I`m due for more.

Excellent! Thanks folks.
So "John and Barb's Dating Service" is a go...pull the blinds and presto, viable seeds in the Fall
Suspending the pollen branch near the top would let the wind do the work?
Or maybe a little paintbrush.
I recall what H said when I used a brush to pollinate the Citrus..."isn't that a little kinky"?
Whichever mail or courier is fine, I'll send you $ to cover.
I'm up to my eyeballs in palm seedlings (remember the 25+ Foxtails ??? ) + others.
Totally out of space here...

Holy cow, a long time to wait
BTW, postal strike means letter deliveries only 3 times a week for now.
Will check the mailbox for pollen Friday.
Thanks!

Barb I sent pollen UPS. You will get it on Monday. I got a few chuckles from the guy and gal at the UPS outlet when I had to describe the item to be shipped. They are entering it into the most unusual item shipped in 2011. He is now stopping by to maybe buy some palms. Sending your pollen just brought me some business.

That's a hoot John!
Just tell 'em you're sending sperm!
Glad you sent it UPS--Vernon is one of the small towns hit today by the postal strike.
I was in town this morning, drove past the picketers at the post office.
Resisted the urge to shout out the window "thanks to you, I can't get the sperm in the mail".
Barb
BTW, 4 days for UPS to drive 35 miles?
