Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

stem?

Post by TerdalFarm » Sun Dec 27, 2009 3:55 pm

That's great!
Does anyone know if the advice about lateral stem growth being associated with better cold resistance is accurate?

Accurate might not be the best description... Dr. John from Co. certainly thinks that there is a correlation between the creeping trunk and cold tolerance. However, at this phase just a hypothesis (Gibbons mentioned in a recent article that he thought the trunk creep might be due to poor light conditions... Which is absolutely absurd imo).

Did this video mention that the trunk creep was associated with cold tolerance? If so, it is a good thing that I turned it off after 15 secs!

Might be akin to this lovely video:

Please note that this video is from well-known scammers tyty nursery. DO NOT buy from them, do not beleive their cheesy videos, avoid them at all costs!

article?

Paul,
thanks. I was skeptical about the lateral trunk claim. Can you help me find the article you refer to?
I'll watch the TyTy video later. I have seen some of theirs before. Thanks for the notice.
As for vendors, I have used Cistus in person and Stokes Tropicals by mail order. I plan to buy a big Sabal from Amazing Gardens in person this Spring.

The creeping trunk does increase the plant's resistance to cold during a period of time. It protects the growing point from cold (more insulation/more warmth from the ground). Once the growing point goes moves higher in the plant, it becomes useless. So it doesn't make the actually plant more cold hardy but the growth habit increases its resistance to cold while the growing point is protected.
