Planting the palms on a slope against the house makes most sense to me. Here is a picture I quickly drew up: The house gives off warmth. Planting on a slope gives the roots the warmth of the house. The mulch insulates the ground and cold air sinks down the slope. http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/8...

Sabal Minor start growing very fast when the temperatures are 85+ F and the lows down't fall below around 78F. Water them every day when its this hot and use a slow release fertilizer (will release more fertilizer at higher temperatures). I don't have any Nannorhops but I've they should be kept as d...

Osmocote is slow release 15-9-12 and contains minor nutrients (includes epsom salts). In fall, I add extra Epsom salts and Potash for the winter. You may want to add both during droug...

There isn't much difference between the two. Everything is the same except N,P,K, and S (Plant is 5-3-3-1 and Holly is 4-6-4-5). It most likely won't make any difference if your soil is already acidic.

Epsom salts is Magnesium Sulfate. (they sell it at drug stores) Magnesium is very important to creating the green pigment in leaves since it makes up Chlorophyll along with Carbon, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Hydrogen.

I would use Manganese Sulfate as well.

The leaves will fry in the lower 20's but the plant can come back after defoliation. I've heard of a few that are in Zone 5b with leaf mulch protection.

I'm going to try a few this year in the colder NW location of the house.

Musa basjoo spreads everywhere. It will be a giant clump after a few years. Once you get a few days in the 90's for highs and 70's and for lows, the plant can produce a new leaf every 5-7 days with heavy fertilizer.

Do you have a picture? When some Trachycarpus become too dry, they fold up like and accordion. But the leaves will also fold if there is a deficiency of Boron. If you water too much or just had a large rain storm, all the Boron can leach through the soil and you'll have to wait for decomposing organ...

All that matters for location is picking the spot that receives the least amount of wind. You most likley have the best spot if its protected from the SW to NW winds. Gowing plants in full sun actually hardens them against cold. But if the roots freeze during the winter, the leaves can get damaged f...

You may want to consider the SE, E, and NE sides of your house depending on its position. When there is cold air coming from the W or SW, it hits the South side of the house. Mulching for the winter in order to insulate the roots will help a lot. I would also add a slow release fertilizer with micro...

There are pictures of the lifestages at the bottom.

They're common but rarely seen since they only have a 1 week life spand as an adult and they're nocturnal. So you can only find them in their hiding spots during the day.

I've crossed the border 4+ times and they did not check anything. (from Buffalo) They just ask what you are planning to do and check your info.

You should be able to find large Trachycarpus from Virginia Beach (South of me), coastal North Carolina, and throughout the eastern part of South Carolina.

I have Humifusa from the coastlline. Its very tolerant of moisture, but can not take constant moisture - needs good drainage. The coastal plants have been flooded under salt water.

The only bad thing about this cactus is the fact that it turns on its side and becomes discolored during cold weather.
