Been a bitter week here NJ style too. Although the snow is pretty for a change, it's already getting old. Our lake has not frozen in two years and it is frozen now. Our pond and waterfalls in the backyard are frozen solid. I know the fish will be ok, but I worry about the red eared slider turtles and frogs and toads. They havent been through a pond freeze yet. 🙁

Our lowest temp this year was on January 23, 2013, we reached 13 F (-10 C) at night with a high of 22F ( - 5 C) during the day. This is the first time in a decade we have had temps not getting out of the 20's F during the day for more than three days. That is not good! I hope all my stuff survives, don't know though. It has never been tested like this before. I know these temps are nothing for many of you, but they are a shock to NJ folks. At least the duration is. And the crazy thingis that we are back up to the 40's and 50's F in the seven day forecast. Roller coaster!!! 😯

At least it warms back up and the cold doesn't last to long-I can live with that-

all part of a progressive pattern I guess, cold last night(9F) after a high in the low 40s yesterday...

Maybe near 60F by Mon or Tues with ice possible Sunday morning, then back to cold Wednesday
and some more 40s down the road-so not to ridiculous this winter yet....

know the fish will be ok, but I worry about the red eared slider turtles and frogs and toads.

Wouldn't they just hunker down for a snooze in the mud at bottom as it freezes over?
Wildlife is pretty resilient.

In summer, I often hear the odd frog in my plant saucers on the patio, but seldom see him.
Have no idea where he over-winters, but my little pond is frozen all winter, every winter.
Even the big pond freezes solid.

Hope your plants can shrug off the cold, Mike.

Glad you're warming up again Jim...I'd give my best tooth for 60F right about now.

27 here right now, opened my trachies and they look great! warm and toasty but not too hot. Bananas are too wrapped and covered to even think of looking at. barb, i think the frogs and turtles will do that, i hope.

Really back into mild westerlies here max 57F today. Would have liked to be out in the garden but I've been hit by a particularly nasty cold bug courtesy of my dear wife. Turned into Bronchitus. Yuk :pukeright:
