shnay

good one 😆

a 1 gal pot CIDP might be happy in pot(s) for a few years, say, until it's a 5 gallon.
Mine did best in the hottest windiest spot, with lots of water.
It actually lived in pots for probably 30+ years, finally ending up in a plastic garbage can with tons of drain holes drilled in the bottom.
They don't mind root pruning, either. Several times I've cut half its roots off just to get it out of/into pots.

I never see CIDPs in nurseries here.
Maybe baby it for a few years before planting out.

I lost newly in the ground CIDP in Manzanita, Oregon, to the cold last winter. Growing up another in a pot in Oklahoma. It is still outside in Oklahoma! Yes, no complaints about the weather.

Yeah, that was a shame Erik...kind of surprised me actually.
Especially when your Shaving Brush palm made it (which is good).
But I would've bet money that CIDP would survive what Shaving Brush would not.

IMO, always a good idea to keep plants in a pot, and move to larger pot(s), for a few years before they're planted out.
More roots, etc. mean better chance of survival, if winter protection is sufficient.

I know little about the shaving brush palms, and my internet research suggests that no one else does, either.
It was NOT foliage hardy! But recovered well. So, perhaps they are a tiny bit more cold hardy that appreciated.

That's encouraging, Erik, because it's a beautiful palm.
Albeit deciduous. 😆 😆

Thanks Barb, I will do just that. Only problem is, if I have transplant into a garbage can, my wife will haul it to the curb... 😉 I remember seeing your pics of your CIDP, and the root system was incredible.

Almost all of the nurseries around here have no idea what to stock, in fact, the Needles and odd CIDP I've seen, are being sold as houseplants, albeit in blue pots...

Another nursery closer to Toronto claims to have the best palm selection, when they are not even remotely hardy to say the least... I suppose there's not a very big market for what we do.

That's many years away for a CIDP which have a huge amount of fleshy roots.
Mine had been going into serious decline for years and was barely hanging on.

Yeah, isn't that the truth!
We're a pretty small group of hobbyists, especially in Canada.
The "buyers" of those nurseries and stores simply haven't a clue.
Plus they're probably tired of people bringing a dead palm back after winter, wanting a refund.

What Nursery is that? Just curious.

There's a nursery out by me they have tons of cacti but its all of inside according to them even the Agave Parryi they just sat its all indoor stuff. However we know better... They have a few palms but mostly indoor stuff. Cheap Xmas palms and the like. My xmas palm I've grown from seeds are doing quite well they started growing their mature fronds (not little strap leaves) over the summer and and are starting look great. My trick this winter was I got a couple 4 foot kiddie pools and throw all my pots in the pool and I just toss in a bit of water once a week and under a grow light every thing seems really happy. Been busy with all sorts of stuff and as long as I toss in a bit of water they thrive on the neglect.

Hey Tim, that's a great idea with the kiddie pool.
Besides the fact that it creates interest over the winter by monitoring growth patterns and behaviour etc.

I was referring to Valleyview mostly and maybe Humber.
Valleyview does get large washies and the odd super large Bizzy, the rest are Roebeleniis, majesties, bottles...exotics Usually for office buildings and malls.
Humber will get small juvenile windmills from time to time, but still sell them overpriced as an indoor.

One way to tell if their stuff is overpriced, is by pricing a standard musa basjoo. If they are double what you would pay, chances are they are over priced. Then again, I'm like that with everything.
Bieng from Quebec originally, I refuse to buy beer in Ontario.. Lol

Canadian tire thought I was nuts buying kiddie pools in October. It was the only way I could think of keeping stuff watered while I was in Mexico for 2.5 weeks. Even then by the time I was home the plants drank the 40l of water I put in for them. It's nice I don't have to water everything individually just dump in 25l in every 7-10 days everything seems happy. I'll grab a picture of them hanging out in the pool 😉

Nice pic, Erik.
Arctic air is coming next week.
Ours is starting in a day or two.

:lickice:

We got some snow after all on Christmas Eve, everything looked so beautiful Christmas morning.
Snowing all day today, 4 or 5 inches on the ground.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.
