I know it is a constant source of frustration for many here to have their respective USDA garden zones mis-categorized by their local nurseries. I know this is the case for me in Calgary, where we are largely regarded as 3a, even though our climate data clearly shows we're on the warm side of 4a for the last 30 years. This is based on 30 years of data compiled at our freezing international airport (relative to the actual city)-and we come out on the warm side of 4a. This isn't the usual "well, we've been like 5b for the past 32 months, in my micro-zone, with a space heater and two light bulbs"...And yet people here continue to call us 3a-based on what, I do not know!? Oh well, here's the proof, for my mental well being, at least (it's also a cool discussion about the usefulness of measuring temperature at airports and gardening zones in general):

I'm sure some -30 to -40(F) temps will clear it all up 😉

Duncan, nice link.
The author did a lot of work posting that.

I think we're all secretly disappointed climate change hasn't improved our plant-growing environs.

I'm convinced airports are routinely used for weather measurement is because it assured daily, if not hourly, readings (i.e. there's always somebody there).
Yet airports are located in frost hollows, so they're usually the coldest of the entire area no matter what city.

Maybe Winnipeg just doesn't have enough pavement 😆

Merry Christmas to you, too!

Hey man,I'm not secretly disappointed<I am openly disappointed that global warming hasn't warmed things up!
Why do you think my car is outside idling right now?

Hi Jim,

You're out idling your car at 36f? Is this because you consider 36f cold, or because you're attempting to raise the level of greenhouses gasses in our atmosphere to quicken global warming-or both!?

Anything east of Vancouver is still way too cold in winter my estimation, no matter what label or zone you call it. I'd be inclined to believe most palms and exotics would think so too.
Geez there freezin' their asses off in SoCal with temps in the 40's over night. 😆

Cheers, Barrie.

...and anything west is too earthquakey 😆

This year, we'll have our first green Christmas in quite a long time.
Remember your "snowhouse picture" last year, Barrie?
I don't think I ever laughed so hard!

And this year, no snow!

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.
