Had our first hard freeze last night, about a week later than usual.

The Brug was blooming till the end...........................R.I.P

Ditto on the garden,

Steve

Always sad to see the end of another summer season. I was in shorts and a T two days ago, now we're much cooler, cloudly with rain expected for the next 3 - 5 days. A time to collect and trade seed, cuttings, divisions etc. So the process goes on.

Cheers, Barrie.

Steve, so sorry to see that Brug gone.
It was a beauty.
Were you planning on digging it up and putting it in the GH?

Stem cuttings may still be salvagable at this point.

Cheers, Barrie.

That Brug was started from a 6" cutting last spring. Going to wrap it up and mulch to see if it might come back from the roots.

Still have the parent plant in the GH, and plenty of new cuttings available for next spring, just wish it wasn't so cold around here 😀

I'd forgotten you had the Brug parent still.
How that 6 inch cutting grew this year!

Let's hope for mild weather until Christmas!

Here in zone 8, I've overwintered Brugmansia in-ground. With each subsequent winter setback, the following years growth is diminished. After about the third year there's scarcely any point to the excercise. I've found it far better to grow again from cuttings which have been rooted and left in a cool spot for the winter. As you've so pointed out, yours grew from a 6" cutting to this great beast in one season. You of course should try your own to prove me wrong 🙂

Cheers, Barrie.

Barrie,

Thanks for sharing your experience with these.
(I really don't think I can do any better than you have 😀
This one has grown to well to just leave out, think I will dig it up and move it to the cellar.

Brugmansia are still blooming (Nov.17-2008 ) and temps today hit near mid 60's. It can't last much longer.

Cheers, Barrie.

Oh Barrie... We just lost the remaining blooms last night, the temperature plummeted to -4C and will just scrape above freezing today. Ah well, I got to enjoy roses and geraniums up to mid November, I guess I shouldn't complain!
Oh, and for the record, the garden in Sydenham was frozen back in october... I would wager that the frost-free season in Toronto is probably a month (or more) longer!
