Hurricane force

Post by Okanagan desert-palms »

Jay hurricane force winds have made a mess and over a million people without power in Washington and B.C. I wonder how the palms on the coast faired. I heard the gulf islands have been without power for 4 days already. Hope Joe and everyone on the coast are OK.

Power

Post by Wes North Van »

Jay and John,
Just got my power back an hour ago.
The winds were incredible. All of my palms faired well. My largest Fortunei which is 20' tall has wind damage to the fronds but all it is is bent fronds. It still looks good.
It has been an unusual fall here with below average temps and snow and extreme winds. I have had enough and it isn't even winter yet.
Still in a zone 8b though. My low so far is -6.9C.
We actually haven't been below freezing yet this December. All the cold temps were in November.

Wes thats great they made it through :) . Good to hear your power is up. It`s amazing how much we take power for granted until it goes down.

I'm glad that you came out of the storm okay.

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

Storm

Post by Wes North Van »

Thanks everyone.
John, you are right! We do take luxuries such as electricity for granted. I lost my power for 32 hours. We also lost our phone service. The trachies faired well in the storm. No real damage.
Waggies and Chamaerops humilis are unharmed from wind storms. The less hardy palms I had protected and they are of course fine. I think areas around Seattle, Victoria and the Gulf Islands are in worse shape than Vancouver. According to the news some of those areas will be out of power for almost a week. Even as far south as Olympia and Portland got hit with the winds.

Those nasty Winds missed us here on SSI. THere were some gusts up to 52 kmph at my loction, but on the most part just breezy here. Sooke got nailed really bad, and so did area son the lower mainland. More winds in the forcast for tonight and tommorrow. Nothing here at the moment. At least it mild out there. Joe

Wind

Post by Wes North Van »

The wind did not hit the lower mainland, however the Island sure did.
Wind warning has been lifted for Greater Vancouver area.
It has been mild for awhile now and the long range is more of the mild temps
