Although the temps at the Kelowna airport are reading at 11:45 pm -8 c 16 f my temps are -4c 22f what a diference only 10 miles from my house. I hope this is our cold snap before el nino begins? My large palms are doing very in my carport. The entrance from my house is open just a little to let some warmth + 8c 46f. Anybody from the forum live in a microclimate away from the official temps in your city.

cold temps/microclimate
John, Those temps are downright cold (for this time of yr)..
Hopefully El Nino kicks in to the benefit of us all.
We had our lick of cold wind last wkend (boy did it blow), but no snow (close to Lake Ontario and in a semi microclimate). The temps where I am are slightly more moderate because of the lake effect.
There has been a difference in the past of a few degrees from the official and my own recorded temps. Since wind is a big factor, creating that wind block really helps.
So far...my palms and hardies are ok-still outside...raised beds and creating your own microclimate I'm convinced is the way to go...

Okangan Sonoran desert
Nucci we are a 4 hour drive 1 hour flight from Vancouver. We don`t have 20 ft palms YET. I for one will be changing that. We are much drier and hotter in the summer than Vancouver but colder in the winter.Kelowna is a solid 6b to 7a.I`ll stop now before I sound like I work for the tourism board LOL. Here are some sites if you are interested about Kelowna.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Cooler
Jay, late this afternoon I went out int my garden a took some pics. I just e-mailed them to you. A few areas of our island got nailed with frost this morning. I drove past a rather sad looking banana clump on my drive into work this morning. Everything looks great up here on the north tip of the island. Never got cold enough to cause any damage to tender exotics. Cheers, Joe
Growing palms and other exotic plants here in the Southern Gulf Islands.
Airport readings
The temperature readings for Nanaimo originate in Cassidy at the airport. Those readings are most often cooler anytime of year than elsewhere in the surrounding area. I'm about 25 miles north of the airport in Lantzville and I find my temps warmer than the airport 99% of the time. I live on the upper side of town at about 235' elevation and we are sometimes cooler in winter than the lower elevation near the beach. Summers are noticeably warmer and it's no more than a mile away.
Cheers, Barrie.

Temps
I consistantly two degrees warmer than the Vancouver Airport which is situated right at the end of the Fraser river that is the channel for all of the cold air that comes from the north east.
Vancouver is a solid zone 8 and is home to some 20' plus trachies. Hopefully soon to some large waggies, takils and chamaerops humilis

Vancouver and Victoria
Are close together however Victoria is on an Ixland and farther away from the mountains so it stays drier. As far as temps go they are very similar if you refer to parts of Vancouver that are close to the water.
Parts of Vancouver that are away from the water can get colder
