Even in a northern zone 4b climate a Phyllostachys aureosulcata can get out of hand quickly. I had to move a large chunk of mine because it was running the wrong way.
One tool required is a good shovel, I've broken more than my fair share of 'cheap' shovels over the years and finally splurged on a good titanium one.
Here's the plant "Before", running on to the septic bed:
