This white stuff is on the underside of my pindo palm fronds. Only on the older lower leaves. Any idea what it is
and how to get rid of it?

They're scale insects. Spray them with a systemic insecticide.

I often get them when palms are in the house over winter, they burn off and wash away with heat and rain. They wipe off too...

Mealy bugs!

Post by Okanagan desert-palms » Wed Oct 06, 2010 8:25 pm

You have an infestation of mealy bugs IMO . http://www.cactus-art.biz/note-book/Dic ... y_bugs.htm Use a garden hose with a spray nozzle to remove them. Here is a remedy to control them after. http://www.ehow.com/how_6935_control-mealybugs.html Since winter is coming soon they will die after the first frost with that Butia planted outside.Very nice palm by the way!

Johns right, mealy bugs. If you touch them they will be sticky. Frost will kill them but a neem spray or a systemic will speed up the process for peace of mind.

Coffee grounds for mealybug!

Post by Okanagan desert-palms » Wed Oct 06, 2010 11:53 pm

I posted earlier about how to use rubbing alcohol to control mealybug`s. After reading Steve`s post on "Cycads"posted article on how well coffee grounds kill and control mealybugs.Thank you Steve. I am going to try it on my one and only Cycas revoluta and my other Cycad I got from Barb C. debaoensis. Damn mealybug`s every winter in the house. I`m now going to give it a try for my tropical palms and every other plant that is inside as they become infested as well. Now to find the right dosage?
