I just thought I would pass this info along to you guys. I found a magic banana fertilizer from Florida called Banana Fuel, this stuff should be called Banana Rocket Fuel. I got it about three weeks ago and WOW!!! major results. As I wrote before my basjoos are pushing out 6 foot leaves now every 3-4 days. So I would say this stuff is doing the trick, plus before they were a bit on the yellowish side but now they are green as can be. I do use more than the recomended dose since I wont be eating the fruit, I use it every 5-7 days.

It does sound like rocket fuel.

I just heard from a gardening friend that Blackstrap molasses -- ARE YOU SITTING DOWN? -- are part of the ingredient list of most successful fertilizers because of its trace elements like calcium and chromium, among others.

Before I order the rocket fuel, I'm gonna try a tablespoon of blackstrap molasses (cheaper than dust) on a plant, stirring it into water to dilute it.
I'll find something I don't mind killing if it doesn't work.

Not sure how I missed this post!

It looks like 'Banana fuel' (15-5-30) is one of, if not the, best banana fertilizers around. The shipping to Canada will be far too much for me to get it. I might try to find a similar formulation then ammend it with molasses to get the trace elements.

Is there any harm in using a nitrogen-free trace element 'fertilizer' on plants this late in the season? I'm thinking my soil is missing some micronutrient (I thought it might be iron, but it also might be magnesium). I want to give a treatment of both Ferrous sulphate and magnesium chloride... Is there anyway this will lead to new growth being produced?

Paul your way more informed on this type of stuff then me, I'm just a young pup wanting to learn. I would really like to go back to school to study horticulture, this really is my calling. I'm only 29 so why not. I might as well start gathering data now just in case. I wish to aquire the same type of knowledge as you, you always seem to know a lot about every type of tree/plant in and out. That's the knowledge I would like to obtain. Sorry I didn't answer your question Paul, all I know is this seems to be hands down the best fertilizer for bananas.

Paul, university is years behind me but I don't think a non nitrogen or even very low nitrogen would necessarily hurt at this time of year.

Certainly a micronutrient supplement would/could help as long as the plant is able to take it up ie. not dormant.

Once the frost hits I would think most nutrients would just sit there unless they are mobile in the soil and washed away.

I'm sure someone here would know much more about this than I. Interesting that I do see more and more talk of fertilizing in the fall and not just on lawns and fall planted bulbs either.
