My yuccas 2015 (lots of pics!)
Hi everyone!
It's been awhile that I haven't posted here so I like to share pics of the progress my yuccas (grown from seed) have made and also new additions mainly "hybrids"
This is my rock garden where I've planted many of my yuccas, the difference from 2014 is that pure rostratas are missing, all died I had protected 3 from rain/snow but the winter was just too cold, so many nights at -30 c + were surely fatal, I still have 2 in pots and 1 that is planted near the foundation of the house and will be protected with frost cloth & styrofoam, we'll see if it makes it, fingers crossed for a mild winter.
Rock garden August 29, 2015
this is what it looked like at winter's end, all rostratas and baccatas ,cacti & some sempervivums dead except the glaucas which survived easily.
Rock garden spring 2015
What I learned from this experience is that glaucas are bulletproof, lowest temp here was -36c & I think it can surely withstand -40c
biggest surprise was the baccatas: those left unprotected survived easily intact! but those that were protected from rain & snow perished wth?!
yucca baccata grown from seed survived intact (pic taken april 13, 2015)
same baccata august 29 (22 months old)
this is my best yucca glauca grown from seed (pic taken April 29, 2015) - 16 months old
and the same glauca this past Aug 29, amazing growth!
I have 2 yuccas "color guard" and my original filamentosa, the only ones that are not grown from seed
yucca glauca #2 - Aug 29 (19 months old)
yucca glauca #3 (with 2 offshoots at each side which makes it look bigger) - Aug 29 (19 months old)
and now I would like to share pics of my hybrids which some have shown incredible growth in just a short amount of time
yucca (Filamentosa x Glauca) X Elata #1 (9 months old)

Yucca Elata X Filamentosa #1 (1 year old)
Before & after pics June 29- Sept 9
and here is a comparison with my best yucca glauca and my filamentosa color guard
yucca Elata X Filamentosa #2 (1 year old)
yucca Elata X Filamentosa #3 (this one has a bit thick stem)- 1 year old

yucca Flaccida (Poconos Mts, PA)x Filata X Filamentosa x Rostrata #2 (Tim's hybrid-thanks!)- 6 months old
yucca Gloriosa Tenn. X Filamentosa x Rostrata #1 (Tim's hybrid-thanks!)- 6 months old

yucca Glauca X (Filamentosa x Glauca) - 9 months old
Yucca Arkansana X (filamentosa x glauca) - 8 months old
yucca Filamentosa X Rostrata #1 (Tim's hybrid-thanks!) - 6 months old
yucca Elata X Filamentosa #4 (with a stem)- 1 year old
yucca Elata X Filamentosa #5 (with offshoot that grew almost the same size)- 1 year old
yucca Elata X Filamentosa #7 with a small woody stem - 1 year old
yucca (Filamentosa x Glauca) X Elata #2 (before & after: July 22-Aug 29)- 6 months old
yucca (Filamentosa x Glauca) X Elata #3 (before and after pics: June 29-Aug 29)- 6 months old
yucca Filamentosa X Rostrata #2 (Tim's hybrid-thanks!)- 5 months old, hasn't grown much - all the seeds from this hybrid germinated easily but I lost most of it because of a lack of chlorophyl in the seedlings, only 4 survived and 2 look weak/fragile.....time will tell and also the winter test!
yucca Thompsoniana X campestris - Aug. 29 (6 months old)
Thanks for your time

Nice collection of Yucca...
that Colorguard sure is a pretty
Yucca when it can be fully seen.
Do you use any kind of cover over them?
If looks like with 2 fence sides already in play
that you could put a rain cover at least coming off
that and maybe some sides later for winter.

Cool stuff! Hope to see some of those hybrids make it through the winter! You're in a similar (but slightly warmer?) zone than I am, I'm in a solid 4b near Kingston, ON.
I'll see if I can't grab some pics of mine in a few weeks for comparison.

Thanks Jim! I really like my yuccas color guard, both really stand out in the gardenhardyjim wrote:Nice collection of Yucca...

I usually don't protect my yuccas except this past winter when I made a shelter to protect my young yuccas grown from seed but it didn't help much. I think a frost cloth with 3-4 feet of snow could be the best protection for my situation......I will tell you next spring

If I believe the current predictions for this coming winter, it should be mild but with lots of snow which I don't mind, snow is the best blanket for most of the plants, who would have thought that my 2 baccatas barely 1 year old would survive -36 C with only a 4 feet wet blanket of snow?
similar zone yes, if I look at the map I'm a bit more north also I'm located at the northern limits with neighbor city St-Lin which is classified as 4b
It would be really cool if you could share pics of your hybrids, I've seen some of your yuccas especially your glaucas which look great and you have plenty of space to grow lots more yuccas

Hi Edwin.... those Yuccas really look good and the pictures have an amazing clarity to them. No favourites there, I'd have them all in my garden. Lets hope the Winter is kinder for you.

Thank you for your nice comments, I'm really happy about the growth of my yuccas until now, I try to take my pics early in the morning or late in the afternoon, it gives me nice pics most of the time....fingers crossed for a mild winter

Great bunch of yuccas you have there. Love the garden, looking forward to seeing how they look in a few years. Going to be awesome!

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Edmar: nice collection you got there! What about rainfall in your area? Is it high?

Thanks Marceli.......rainfall here is fairly high?, in July we get over 100 mm of rain, check this graph for more info http://www.worldweatheronline.com/Terre ... ec/CA.aspxmarceli wrote:Edmar: nice collection you got there! What about rainfall in your area? Is it high?
I'm surprised that my 2 baccatas handle the rain very well, must be my very fine sandy soil and the river stones all around makes for an excellent drainage!

I agree, that and building a mound for your yuccas helps. Drainage, drainage, drainage, and location, location, location. Everyone wants a house on the hill, so do desert plants. lolEdmar wrote: must be my very fine sandy soil and the river stones all around makes for an excellent drainage!

Thought that my location receives much rainfall but yours is high indeed! And these winter temperatures. Guess my winters are not so bad

I just feel lucky to be able to grow other varieties besides filamentosa & glauca, I think hybrids are the way to go if you have cold/very cold winters

I might suggest that they are the ONLY way to go! I'm still waiting for someone to make some Yucca brevifolia hybrids. I was able to overwinter a brevifolia for about 3 years in my garden (moisture protection, absolute minimum low was -32C), but they won't take the cold/wet long term.Edmar wrote:I just feel lucky to be able to grow other varieties besides filamentosa & glauca, I think hybrids are the way to go if you have cold/very cold winters

Totally agree with you, as for yucca brevifolia hybrids, I think I read in Benny Jensen website that the only two species where there's no record of hybrids are yucca brevifolia and y. Whipplei, must be real difficult to hybridize those two!I might suggest that they are the ONLY way to go! I'm still waiting for someone to make some Yucca brevifolia hybrids. Nice progress in one year!
P.s. Beside desirable Y. brevifolia hybrids I'm looking for Y. aloifolia hybrids which are easier to do.
