Foolproof protection?

Post by Okanagan desert-palms »

I found this site the other day for protecting palms in the winter. I think I will be planting a couple of my W.filifera along with Trachy`s and know they will make it through the 4 to 6 weeks each winter when needed. I`ve never seen such a complete protection package for palms. The crown, trunk ,and roots all are protected.

Hehe... I have seen these listed before. What is the price of them? They don't look like they can take much wind...

Prices

Post by Okanagan desert-palms »

Laaz waiting on prices on the various models. I also requested wind tolerences and any guarantee they carry. All in all I have yet to see anything comparable in North America. Price can be an issue depends on how far you are willing to go to have other palms planted besides needles. Having this type of protection brings peace of mind for a very expensive hobby.

I would also be interested. I had planned on using standard heat tape available at Canadian Tire tied to flexible copper tubing that would stick into the ground and be wound around the palm.

Allen I will let you know when I get an answer. The company looks to be in business for over 10 years. Maybe wishful thinking but I`m already dreaming of; lets see Queen palm, Bismarkia nobilis, Mule palm, Triangle palm, LOL

I understand John. I have similar dreams but they include Sabal minors, Trachys and maybe a Musari Palm and a cycad.

winter protection

Post by PALMETTOMAN »

John,

Yeah, wind looks like a factor...but....lets see how they hold up!...

Even for my Oleander's and smaller palms that are not as high this might work well?

Palmetto I look forward to next winter and using a couple of these systems. I`ll try a couple of palms with just regular protection ,mulch and over head protection as an experiment.

protection

John,

My hardies are pretty well hardened off...Garaged at -8C lowest this winter..no problems...looking good..no spear pulls.

Now, if the wind chill can be eliminated outside..ie-plexi cover-it shouldn't be a problem...(with extra heat etc.)

I like the German design..it may do the job for me near the house!
