Vancouver Palm Update Mid Jan
Hi everyone - temperatures have soared to double digits here in the last few days to 13 C ! We got 15cm of snow last week for a day or two and it washed away with all the rain and warmth we got. I had to unwrap the Trachy from its burlap and garbage bag so it could enjoy our weather. See some leaf damage but other that that the center spears are growing nice and green! Also uncovered the banana trees so they wouldn't rot. Pups flopped a bit but mother is doing fine!

Thanks Jim, I hope so too! according to our long range forecast we're pretty much done as far as large dumps of snow go. However, temperatures are supposed to average near or below normal for the rest of winter. Take a look at AccuWeather's forecast for the rest of the winter. www.accuweather.com/blogs/news/story/44 ... est-la.asp?
Thanks Barb - they sure are growing, I'm so proud

Tim - I think the lows got to about -8C (17.6 F) for a few nights. the highs were about -2C or so but this didn't last for a long stretch....temps were usually just at the freezing mark or above. I wondered if that's when it got the leaf damage or my thoughts were also the same as wxman - it got too moist...or maybe a bit of both? we've had nothing but rain so it hasn't had a chance to dry out a bit. My other Trachy on the other hand is nice and dry under its shelter and leaves are perfect. Next year I'll get one built for the other one too!
Erik - I'm glad to see green on the Musa too. The black insulated tube protected it well, although when I took it off the stalk seemed a bit frozen so I'm glad I uncovered when I did, to let it thaw out a bit. Wondering what more I can do to protect it next year? It's so trial and error isn't it!
Thanks for looking guys!

Heidi,
Yeah, if the one under the shelter is in mint shape then it's most likely the moisture that caused the damage. Regardless, they look great. Mine are under 2 feet of snow in their insulated enclosures. I would be very grateful to open them up in January!!
They will grow nicely for you this summer.

Thank you Tim - is there anything I can do for the damage do you know? or will it turn green again eventually? Yours sound very cozy, safe and tucked in nicely. I'm sure they'll look awesome as usual when the time comes to uncover them!
