Seedling pictures

Post by Alchris » Tue May 02, 2006 8:06 pm

Here is a picture of the year old T. fotunei seedlings that I got from Banana Joe.

This is some of a dozen or so Washington Filiferra seedlings that germinated 3 months ago.

My miniature date and sabal minor seedliings are only about 2" tall 2 months after germination.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Lighting in winter

Post by Okanagan desert-palms » Fri May 05, 2006 2:12 pm

Allen looking very healthy. Have you tried any supplemental lighting for your seedlings? Mine just love the extra lighting especially the Washy`s.

My washy's got a southern window with only the low E coating between them and the sun from about 2 weeks after their first leaf until I started putting them outside during the day. My supplementary lighting consists of 'cool white' compact flourescent . It is very close to natural light and is much more efficient. The Jacarandas loved the light and don't like the outside much. what kind of supplemental lighting do you use?

The T. fortuneis haven't shown much change since being put outside but the Washys have almost doubled in size to between 10 and 16". The sabal and the date palm have not grown much but the single leaf is thicker and greener.

It has been sunny almost every day with temperatures averaging 15 to 23C. Within the next 2 weeks I will have them all outside for the summer.

When are you going to put you Washys outside?

Lights and washy`s

Post by Okanagan desert-palms » Sat May 06, 2006 5:36 pm

Allen I use 2/ 1000 watt bulbs for the winter. I have my T. fortuneis out for 3 weeks temps have been mid 20`s C or for our American friends mid 70`s F . I have my 7 month old W.filifera`s out for 1 week with lows of 2c or 34f no problem. I will post some pics of them outside when I get my D camera fixed. Here are some pics of their development along the way.

That is quite powerful compared to mine. I will have to look into a larger set of lights for this fall. I don't have a greenhouse, I stick them in the livingroom window which has a south exposure. But this winter I will have easily twice as many as last winter.

Yours sure look good.
