Warming trend?

Post by yuccaman »

Yesterday we had a temperature of 8C with heavy rain with some rumbles of thunder. We had 25 cm of snow on the ground and now its only 9 cm. I have been
looking on the forecast and the 6 day looks very promising for warm weather. On the 14 day trend is showing temperature from 4C to 10C with a few -3 drops.

I think global warming is starting to hit us because all the storms we had this year were freezing rain and ice pellets and rain when sometimes they are calling
fore just plain snow so we did not have a bad snow storm at all but it could change but I am hoping for warmer weather.

People on the BC coast are getting lucky to see some warm temperatures and hope for the same for us. Hope January does not turn out crap.

It's certainly not "warm" here on the BC coast. I don't think we've broke 7 celcius (45f) for the past 3 weeks and plenty of light frosts overnight. Snow on a few occasions too during that time which never seem to last long but are a pain in the ***!

It looks like I been paying attention on your long range forecast with a few warmer days heading your way. I noticed that your temperatures were below average with some bit snow and frosts. Its a pain for me too because all we seen this winter so far was very little sun with a lot of storms and this week we
are getting another storm with rain or snow. I bet the palms you have are doing great because our storms were so much worse and lots of cold an ice.

Yesterday was finally quite nice 9's and 10's celcius around the area with clear sunny skies. Rain and wind today (Christmas) and cold.
Hope you have a mild remainder to the winter season! Cheers, Barrie.

If I use the USDA zone ratings, our winters are zone 8b minimum and sometimes 9a and 9b during the milder winters. To this point we've had one night where the mercury dipped to -2.5c (27.5f) putting us on track for a zone 9b winter. We however have a long way to go and January is our biggest hurdle.

January is not really a bad month for us but it is February that offers the extreme cold and winter storms and last year were had a dangerous -26C which had a
impact on few small trees. Our warmest winter was a zone 8a (on record) and a few people had left Trachys out and did kind of well.

s/ontario mild up

Post by PALMETTOMAN »

Its about time!

Mid Jan is usually the start of the cold temps here so lets just hope we don't get whacked too hard like last year...

So far our lows have been ok...I think we had 1 or 2 nights at -11C or so...

The nxt 10 days look ok...

Winter so far

Post by Wes North Van »

We are having a zone 9b winter so far. The key in that statement is so far.
It is a funny winter though.
Usually when it rains we get warmer temps than we are getting and when it is a clear day and night we usually are colder than we are getting this year.
We seem to get the same temps no matter whether it is a clear day or cloudy day.
Average lows are +1 and highs around +5C.
I have only seen snow once and it lasted just one day.

Interesting and accurate summary Wes as the same seems true here. The only difference is we've had more snowfall than you, 7 inches on one occasion and a light (an inch or less) on at few other times. Yesterday (Dec 27) we had an inch of snowfall in the afternoon hours here which is mainly gone now. It was very wet and heavy as the temps where near the freezing point. The November totals for precip where down conciderably from average. Much more sun this fall/winter than most years. Again as you've pointed out, even on clear nights the temps are barely below freezing but day temps struggle to rise above 5c (40f). The only exception recently was Dec 26 where we where at 9c (48f) and if today shapes up like it seems to be, then we could repeat that.

I live only 6 feet above sea level so I rarely see snow but up the mountian or further east they have seen snow a few times this year. In the Fraser valley they saw about the same as you around 6 to 7",
We have high cloud today so I can see up the mountians and there is snow not that much further up than my place.
I wish it would warm up. The long range forecast for Vancouver is pretty much the same as we have been getting.
Lows +3 and highs +5C and rain except for Monday which is our one and only day of sun.

Wes ... Elevation does factor into the equation as I'm at about 235' above sea level. Down in the village of Lantzville there was little if any snow yesterday. I just popped outside an snapped these pics of the rapidly melting snow. It's been mainly sunny here and the temp is 8c (46f) at noon. Looking north toward the sunshine coast, it looks rather dreary. I did spot a few blossoms on one of my Eucalyptus pauciflora ssp. debeuzevillei.

You are right it is dreary over here. No rain but solid cloud cover. The temp is +5.6C or 42F.
Send some of that sunshine over here.

We are still at a 5b winter as the official temperature on Dec 1/07 was above -26*C. What happened to the -27 to -29*C days I don't know. I guess they were not official.

We usually get the coldest temperatures in the first half of January but the forecast only calls for 1 day at -22*C. Maybe we will get lucky this year.

Allen ... it sure would be nice for you to have a mild Edmonton zone5b winter but as with us here, January will tell the tale.
I assume your Trachycaprus fortunei (Windmill palm) is holding it's own under the shelter you built?

Wes ... just checking in again at 8:20 pm under clear skies, dead calm and my digital is showing 32.2f . I don't think (from the forecasters anyway) we are expecting frost again. Looks like that is a very good likelyhood tonight. My Musa basjoo psuedostems are still rock solid, only the leaves have drooped with the frost and snow.

Cheers, Barrie.

So far so good. The temps inside have never gone below -2*C since that cold spell. I will open up the shelter when it gets close to 0* sometime around January 1st. While I install an emergency heat lamp, I can check and see if the light and moisture levels have been good and if the Yucca elephantipes has shown any damage yet.
