Summer spear pull is often caused by phytophthora. I recommend Agri-Fos with active ingredient of Mono- and di-potassium salts of Phosphorous Acid.

Trachycarpus fortunei or T. wagnerianus commonly spear pull until well established. Two friends in Tennessee tell me every one of their windmill palms spear pulled every year until they reached 4 feet in height. I would apply hydrogen peroxide into the spear area and recover.

If you are looking for a larger one , I have seven gallon ones for $45, plus shipping. The Brazoria palmetto is on the right, with a 'Cape Hatteras' Sabal minor on the left. These are in five gallon containers but seven gallon size is similar. http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t281/Stevea07/Palms ...

You have multiple problems. Your potting mix is low in calcium; a fungus is attacking the soft, new growth; your potting mix is probably too wet because you have a boron deficiency.

Barb, a 10 year old Jubaea should be 5.5 feet tall. I was thinking of a good sized seedling, say 18-20 inches.

There are unfortunately no saw palmettos like those in central Georgia. In fact, that pic was not even taken in Georgia. That variety is most commonly found along the east coast of Florida. The pic below has ones grown from east coast seed. <a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t281/Stevea07 ...

Barb, your soil is too wet. Remove the moisture holding rocks and allow the soil to dry to the point that you can barely feel any soil moisture in the peat. That is the ideal moisture level for Chamaerops.
