They were both planted in 1992 by Palm Society member J.D. Rowell of Sacramento, Cal. They are T.fortunei growing up close to a building in a good microclimate. They have been featured a couple of times over the years in HPI. They were featured last year in one of our journals and they look awesome ...

Ground Freeze
It never freezes long enough to really worry much about the ground frost penetrating. None of my palms are ever mulched because the deepest I've ever seen the ground freeze was and inch or so in the worst blast. My main water pipe from my well to the house is laying on the ground under my sundeck ...

Thanks Wes. They are growing in a friend's garden. They have a huge clump of bananas in the front garden. Those Cordies do just great despite all the salt spray and south easterlies. How does your Cordyline look now? I bet it looks awesome with multitrunks. There was a huge one in town rigt in front of the sewing store. I have dozens of them in my garden. My tallest are like trees now. The largest I've seen on our island have 20'ft of trunk and branched crowns. They are hardy down to approx. -8 C. or 17.6 F. They are cheap to buy and they do grow fast. If they freeze to the ground they will resprout. Joe

I'm sure if the customs dudes discovered you had your pockets full, they'd just take them away and slap your wrists. Heck, I'd just play dumb and say, " I didn't know that bringing seeds back was not allowed" I just wanted to grow them as house plants. Cheers, Joe
