A very interesting article on how the the palm trees came to be on English Bay Vancouver British Columbia. This guy is a genius to have start the whole thing back in 1989. I got a good laugh when he first tells people he belongs to a palm society. 😆

I know Rudi through the PNWPEPS since I became a member in the mid 90's. He is an eloquent and enthusiastic exotic gardener with one of the most amazing gardens at his North Vancouver property. His effort in the early days and as President of the PNWPEPS, paved the way for subsequent endevours and serves as a catalyst for the society and members alike.
Anyone who ever meets Rudy and has a chance to view his exotic garden, knows what I mean. His efforts have been yet to be surpassed by any subsequent president.
Cheers, Barrie.
thanks for posting this!
Great read and pictures John. Spring can't get here soon enough.

And more pics of Vancouver's West End, including comments from people who helped plant those Trachies years ago.

If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.
Thanks guys. Barrie where is Rudy`s house in North Vancouver. You can pm if it`s posssible to see it from the street when I`m down on the coast this spring.Barb those pics are great .I`ve seen some of them before. Not exactly the type of pics of the winter olympics city most people would imagine Vancouver to be. I`m sure people will come away with a whole different view after visiting for 2010.

Yes they will, John.
Vancouver should brace for a population spike.
Here's the 14-day forecast for the Summer (oops, winter) Olympics.

John. I'd have to look up his address and it's been a while since I last was there.
Also, it's on a cul d sac with the vast majority of the garden not visable from the street.
It's situated fairly high up in North Vancouver on a slope that's terraced. A garden tour is the
only way you'll see Rudi's fabulous garden.
I took this pic at a summer BBQ about 10 years ago from a rear deck overlooking the pool area.
There's so much more to see and the photo doesn't do it any justice.
Cheers, Barrie.
Wow, that is one amazing garden. 8) 😯

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.
