Too bad you're not closer...I'd be there in a flash.
What kind of fossils have been found in your area?
Of animals or plants?

There must be an internet site that combines a beginner's love of rocks/fossils/plants.
I've just never found it.

I've taken pics of really interesting rocks and can't find anything on the internet to identify what type of rock it is, let alone how they're formed and the likelihood of finding a fossil within.

Take lots of pics Aaron when you go fossil hunting.

Aaron ... you know it! The fossil finds are awesome. I think it fuels the mind and allows us to get in touch with a point in time we had no part in. Curious as to what was happening or evolving in the earliest part of life on earth. What could be more intriguing for a palm enthusiast?
Barb...
Here, many of us think of ourselves as re-introducing palms back into the lifeform after being obliterated from the last iceage.
Here's a couple more pics that are from the same compressed forest (non palm) at the Duke Point site. It shows leaves from a familiar pattern with identification unknown to me.

Cheers, Barrie.

Barrie, those pics get my heart racing...stunningly beautiful.
Agree with your comment to Aaron about a time when we weren't there, and curious
about what was happening. Also that palms (andparticularly cycads) have been around
for eons and eons.

I'm so excited to have seen those pics Barrie.
The palm leaves are permanently etched in the rock.

AND I have finally found some neat sites that ID rocks -- and more importantly --
which types of rocks are likely to have fossils of plants or animals...

If you folks are interested I think we could do a palm/rock ID/fossil section ?!
I know I'd love it.
But maybe that's not where Jay wants to go with this.
Leave it to the moderator/administrator....HALLOOOOOO, are you there!

Thanks again Barrie

Sure, Sounds good to me. Just let me know what name the forum should be and i'll make a new fossil section for all of you. 🙂

Barb, Did you go see the dinosaur exhibit at the Science center in Vernon? I went with my kids a couple of weeks ago. It was fun. My Son is really into dinosaurs right now. 🙂

Regards,
Jay

Jay, that would be wonderful. Thanks!

How about suggestions from everyone re topic?
Mine would be: Palms (and Other) Fossils

Could there be a link to rock ID sites (some state what types of rocks are likely to contain fossils).

http://www.rocksforkids.com/RFK/identification.html
http://geology.about.com/library/bl/blrockident_tables.htm
http://www.paleocurrents.com/castle_rock/gallery/master_index.html
http://jersey.uoregon.edu/~mstrick/MinRockID/RockID/RockIDChart.html

The best pics for rock ID are:

Thanks again, Jay.
Barb

PS--Heard that the Vernon dino exhibit is great...will get there in October I hope.

Ya ... I don't know of any other palm message board with a specific forum regarding fossils. It could be a slow moving forum but at least a named place for people to check into.

"Too bad you're not closer...I'd be there in a flash."

Barb ... If in the future you find yourself on Vancouver Island, I'll show you where the Duke Point site is.
Cheers, Barrie.

Barrie, thanks for the invite...it'd be a great place to visit.

The site will be slow, but I think the links to palm fossils would be so very interesting.
And naturally most of us would love to find one.
You're a lucky man to have those great specimens.

Thanks for that, Jay.

Barrie, how about posting your palm fossil pics there?
They are a wonderful way to start the palm fossil discussion.

Maybe a few of us can get re-introduced to the passion of rocks/fossils. 😀

awesome pics of the sunshine coast Barrie..

you are quite a fortunate man to be living in such a scenic place...

I absolutely love the palm shots with the evergreens in the background...

when I show these to folks down this way they honestly don't believe its BC/Canada...

... fortunate for sure. The rat race of Vancouver isn't for me. That's one place I would never live. Island life is far more rewarding with a good mix of life styles and always great scenery.

Cheers, Barrie.

P.S. If they don't believe it's BC, let 'em think that. Far too many people have already found us.

And then there are others like me that love the Vancouver area and the alive feel of this city.
A city that never sleeps.

There are tons of palms here and they are more and more being planted every day.

Barrie/Wes

Yes..i agree..we have our own rat race here that I want no part (except for the flavors of the food).
As for palms and exotics its nice to see and hear you are all planting these...

Ours are purely seasonal however...nice to look at on any day...

Wes ... I respect your opinion about Vancouver. It is a very cosmopolitan, multicultural city with alot to offer those who seek city life. To me it's fine on a post card, but living there would send me over the edge. When I lived on the mainland I was in South Delta and rarely ventured into Vancouver.

Cheers, Barrie.
