I had occasion to be on the Sunshine Coast region of British Columbia yesterday. I can see this area from my back deck on Vancouver Island across the Strait of Georgia about 30 miles away, but have never visited previously. Without too much effort one can spot palms and exotics especially in the town of Sechelt (SEE-shelt). I spotted large flowering Cordyline australis and mature palms, a testament to the mild climate. I'm sure that a drive through the neighborhood streets would find more treasures. Next trip when I have more time.
Cheers, Barrie.
My inlaws lived in B.C for many many years, I think its called Nanimo????? Anyway, until I told them, they had no idea that palms existed in B.C. They recently went back for a wedding and when I spoke to them again, they could not believe the palms in B.C. Thats a great pic.
Arctic Palm
The correct spelling is Nanaimo and is located 70 miles north of Victoria on the eastern shoreline of Vancouver Island. I live just north of Nanaimo in a small town called Lantzville. Most palms seen are in the north end where the newer homes are. Older areas don't have as many palms. I took that pic driving by, as I had no time to stop.
Cheers, Barrie.
I think I live in the wrong part of Canada. I guess the trachycarpus love damp weather. They seem to thrive there. I have seen them in Scotland as well, same kinda weather. I have one planted out front and I am going to see how it does this winter with only a clear tarp and a light bulb.
The biggest difference between Scotland or the UK compared to BC (at least southern coastal regions) is that we have a disinct dry season. The British Isles have precipitation amounts spread out over the entire year. This summer was not a typical one here as rain, even minimal accumulations, where happening right through. It was never more than 4 or 5 days of steady sun, although the early part of September was likely the longest stretch of good weather.
Keep us posted on your palms progress. Good luck.
Cheers, Barrie.
Barrie,
There are many palms and cordies in Sechelt.
I have a cabin on Keats in Howe Sound just off Gibsons.
I will have to start experimenting with palms there. I have always thought it was slightly colder there in the winter than here in lower North Van.

Larry Wick certainly has quite a selection of exotics on Keats Island. Maybe he's the one to consult when you want to plant exotics there. I wonder how Gambier Island stacks up with those south western exposure coves and bays.
Here's Langdale terminal just outside Gibsons. Keats Island is to the left out of camera shot in this pic.
Cheers, Barrie.
Nice pics Barrie.
Fossil records show palms near Falkland (between Vernon and Kamloops in the North Okanagan).
Global warming, my foot...

Barb,
I have a piece of a palm fossil from here on Vancouver Island. It just so happens a large palm frond was discovered while the section of highway 19 to Duke Point ferry terminal was being built. I went in afterward and found my chunk of fossilized palm.
Cheers, Barrie.
Barrie, that is sooooo cool. 8)
To have found it yourself, wow.
Have you got a picture of it...I'd love to see it.
Since reading that internet story about fossilized palm fronds in Falkland, we years ago had done some
excavating which turned up a lot of rock. I got on my hands and knees (not a pretty picture 😳 )
and hoped to find a fossil.
Nada. Zilch. Nothing. That I could see anyway!
But it was exciting to me to see and handle rocks that had been buried 20 feet down for
who knows how long. There was one type of rock (several of them) that as I picked them up, they
simply crumbled into the thinnest "sheets", and then dust as they hit the ground.

Barb,
I've always liked and, was fasinated by palaeontology. Below is a link to an article regarding the palm fossil finding and a couple of pics from the piece I have. It clearly shows the peaks and valleys of the leaf detail. There's an entire forest compressed into about 4" or 5" which is visible at the site. I know there must be much more there, but an overpass and private property prevent such excavations.
Cheers, Barrie.
Barb ... another palm fossil find just over the border, not far from Bellingham, Washington.
Cheers, Barrie.
Barrie, me too.
Your pics are beautiful, what an exciting find !
And to think that you own it 😀 Wow
I'd give my eye teeth to have found that 😉
And that Bellingham story was great, hadn't seen it before.
What a fossil that shows...W O W, the sheer size!
And that Duke Point fossil is stunning!
I wear glasses and wonder how much my untrained and poor eyes have missed...
even bone fragments would have been possible in our 20-foot deep excavation,
yet I don't have the training to know what I'm looking for.
I love palms AND fossils...to find the two in one is mind-boggling.
I should'a gone into geology after high school, just to nurture my love of turning rocks over!
Thanks for this, Barrie!

Really cool pics Barrie, I also find fossils to be interesting and been waiting for a friend to go on a fossil hunt with me. There is a good place not far from here.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.
