I was outside casually looking around on this mid January day looking for signs of spring, and it didn't take long to find them. Here's a few pics from around my garden today (Jan. 19-08). Enjoy.

Hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis)

Callistemon 'Canberra Gem'

Daphne laureola

Fremontodendron californicum

Flower buds on Acacia rubida

Flower buds on Laurus nobilis (Bay tree)

Male catkins on Garrya elliptica (Coast silktassel)

Thank you. I needed that. It is -16*C with a 30 KM wind and the only thing reminding me of spring is the trip to Vegas that is still almost 2 months away.

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

What a treat! Thanks Barrie.

How old is your Bay Tree?
Do they grow from cuttings fairly easily? 😉 😉 hint, hint, if they do!
If it's a long arduous process, forget it, no prob.

Barb ... I'm not sure about cuttings from Laurus nobilis (Bay tree). The one I have is waist height, so relatively small compared to it's eventual size. I'm sure a bit of research will turn up more info on rooting stem cuttings. It's maybe 4 or 5 years old. I have a friend that asks for a bay leaf for beef stew recipes and the like. Fresh is always best.

Allen ... One day I'll stop in Vas Vegas longer than it takes to re-fuel the aircraft. My wife seems to have a particular liking to the city that never sleeps. Me, I like my sleep.

Cheers, Barrie.

The city may never sleep but I am in bed by midnight when I go there. I definitely need my beauty sleep. 😥

Barrie, oops, forget about a Bay cutting.
Apparently takes between 6 and 18 months... 😐
I'll find one at the nursery this summer.
