Here are some of my early fall pics from S/Ontario..
For us in Z6 and cooler..I recommend trying potted eucalyptus (now growing into a 10 ft tree), oleander. yucca elephantis, cordyline and musa rojo sumatrana/musa basjoo...I have overwintered these in my garage.

Nice pics! I've never heard of growing Eucalyptus in containers. Here we plant them small so they root down properly. Older pot bound gum trees never send anchoring roots if planted, and will blow over in the wind. I do like the banana plants.
Cheers, Barrie.
Thanks...
Well, I started that euc. off as a 6 inch basket stuffer 4 years ago...
It is now over 8 feet...nice scent in the humidity... I've got 4 more on the go...
I've seen your BC eucs and thats how I was inspired..I here they can grow quite tall...

I have about 15 different species of Eucalyptus growing here. The one in the pic below is Eucalyptus nitens which grows very fast.
Oddly, I did come across a posting on Ian's Hardy Eucalyptus page, where Gus has a peice on his website about container grown Eucs.
Cheers, Barrie.
I just realized after posting that pic that there's 3 Eucs in that pic. A smaller silver one to the right is E. debeuzevillei and on the left just sneeking into the pic is E. niphophila.
Cheers. Barrie.
Palmetto very nice. Is that W. robusta in a pot in the ground? Are those Bananas Musa sikkimensis? They look great and must be enjoying your warm fall.

Barrie...I'll have to check out Gus's page on the euc's..thanks...seems like you have quite the collection?
Philmusa...Yeah..I think by gravling off the yard has really helped in keeping things neat and easy to maintain..not to mention "seasonally friendly"...
John..Yes..My washy is potted for now...however...it will be permanently in the ground nxt year...slightly higher out of the ground and plexied off...It cruised through to about the end of Nov last yr with minimal spotting from the frost and cold but recovered with no problems..I'll harden it off as far as I can this yr.
This March/April, I planted several windmill's in the ground and they will be my focus of protection here in Z6...The windmills will be protected by mini palm houses Dec to March...They will be opened up on mild winter days and closed on cold days..I'll post these later...
The banana is musa sumatrana rojo...it came back from last year....(very slowly)...I protected it with lots of compost and bark and then covered it up with a large container to around March/April..

Beautiful yard Jamie, plants all look nice and healthy.
They sure must be enjoying your "second summer"...man what temps you folks are getting!
Just curious about the blue flag...what's its origin?

Barb..
We've had summer pretty well straight through Sept and into October...the plants just love that warm fall sun and the humidity...lower temps are moving in..but not that low..so thats ok..
What I have noticed here is that my fall colors are just not there yet?? probably due to the heat and drought we had this spring/summer and fall..
Well..my garden flag is the state flag of South Carolina..aka the Palmetto State...
Georgetown SC is our second home so I find it fits the palm theme here in my yard...
Have you pulled your trachy out of the ground yet?
How's it lookin?
Palmettoman Z6-Ajax, On
Jamie, great that your plants are enjoying the warm temps and higher humidity.
The Okanagan of BC has warmed up again after a very cold (high of 8 C) and wet few weeks near the end of Sept.
Sorry I had forgotten about the South Carolina connection with that flag...it's so cool!
Your garden is gorgeous...a manageable size too.
Ours is "all over the place" on acreage and I find that I don't do anything well 'coz there's always so much to do 😐
Nope, the trachy is still in the ground, but not for long.
A couple of days ago, I repotted my big Canary Island Date Palm (what a gong show 😥 ) but instead of hijacking your thread, I'll post the pictures on a new topic under photos. I'm sure everyone will say I'm an idiot and that it'll die
from that treatment. Oh well.
Enjoy your Indian summer...oops, was that PC ??? 😕

Barb..I'd love to have an acre...let me see..yeah...a greenhouse and...what the heck...a hardy plant nursery...
Our summer is over and fall is here...time to bring on the colors...
Good luck with your trachy...

Jamie,
The more land, the more we fill it up with stuff 😆
But I too would love a greenhouse...and a walled courtyard for a micro-climate...and a gardener
to do the grunt work... 😉
Enjoy your fall colours.
Will post some of ours separately.

Barb..you can never have enough space....i mean plants....
I have a small courtyard and the only problem is lack of sun..
Nice mini micro climate however...
PalmettomanZ6-Ajax, On
Palmettoman, plants will reach up to get sun in your micro climate courtyard.
They might be a little lanky when young but, as you say, more room for plants.
You lucky duckie. 😉
We Canadians should consider courtyards to block out harsh northwest winds in winter.
I bet you gain at least two zones with a courtyard.
