I got 10 seeds sent to me from a guy in K.C. that said his tree is in the 5th year of being planted in the ground in K.C. The seeds were from that tree, but I couldn't get any to pop 😳

Wes - I received seeds from the same guy in Dallas who's mother lives in KC. Those seeds never popped, in fact I still have them in my basement and check on them every week or so . NOTHING. The seeds that germinated were from Alligator Alley in Oklahoma City. I ordered something like 40 seeds of some different palms from him and I honestly think every seed but maybe 3-4 popped. All cold hardy stuff.

You know what, I think I got my story mixed up cause that Dallas guy story sounds very familiar. I think my seeds were from the same guy. Good to know I wasn't the only one that couldn't get them to pop. Guess they were not viable seeds.

What's your secret!!!! I have Louisiana's that are not a 1/4 as big as yours and they germinated in January!!!! Thanks for the great pics, although I am going to go sulk now. 😐

Your Sabal palmetto seedling is awesome man! I give mine tons of sun and heat and never get the growth you have. The only one that seems to be doing best from the Sabal species I have is Sabal minor 'North Carolina' from Banana Joe on Saltspring Island here in BC. It's a goer and needs to be planted next spring.

Barrie - I had about 5 sabal palmetto seeds germinate in Jan 06 and the one pictured is doing the best, although they have all been treated equally. In the winter time they are in my basement under a bay of five 75 watt grow lights. The light and heat are intense under these lamps. They seem to love it though. I have a bunch of other tropicals and sun loving plam trees under these lights and they all seem to thrive. So bascially there has been no winter slow down for these palms. They are under good light in winter and moved outside to the heat and sun in the summer. Thanks for your comments.

Cali-wanna-be - No secrets here. I fertilize 1-2 times per month with a Peters 20-20-20 with micros fertilizer diluted to about 1/2 strength. I also water weekly with water out of my backyard pond. I have lots of stuff to water in pots and I bet I spend an hour every weekend just water and fertilizing. That and our heat and humidity is all I got. Our heat is about all gone for the year so I'll start hauling stuff inside in the next few weeks.

Your seedlings are growing about twice as fast as mine.
I have sabal palmettos that are as big as yours but they were started in January 2004.

The seeds I got from Laaz seem to be growing quickly and the germination rate was at least 90%.
