Found this building around the corner from my house. They have two 8' washington filiferas in a front birm and then this landscape design around the office to the apartment complex. It looks quite nice. Notice on the right hand side of the pic is a wash filifera.
I pass this landscape design on the way to work everyday and I am not sure what the red flowers / bush is in the front of the design. Anybody have any ideas? Had to take the picture on the go.

Kent,
Are you saying the P.roebellenii and W.filifera overwinters in ZONE 6?????
I'm encouraged (but wonder if it's Hallowe'en prank a little early!) 😆
The red flowers could be Begonias, or maybe Impatiens?

Hey Barb - very astute of you to notice the zone 6 thangy. This place has had the washy filiferas out front for several years.. This is the first year I can remember seeing the Phx Roebys and wash filifera by the complex offlice. They pull everything out of the ground in late October or early November to overwinter in a commercial greenhouse somewhere. The landscape company that works the apartment complex does this for them. The landscape company uses a front end loader with a chain to pull the filiferas out of the ground and load them on a trailer. Big job. I called the landscape company last fall and inquired about what they were doing with the big palm trees as I was hoping to get something for free thats when the owner told me about his operation and how he is renting more palms and tropical stuff and storing them in a greenhouse for winter, etc.
The red flowers are neither begonias or impatiens. I may have to stop and park , walk around the bank building and take a close up picture of the bush. They have bloomed all summer long. I gotta get me some off those. I'll keep you posted. THANKS for your efforts.

Wow Kent, those are some great pics. Alot of work digging them up and putting them in a greenhouse every year. I'm not sure about the bushes you were talking about. 😐

Kent, great to hear that "plant renting" is catching on.
And if they have a commercial greenhouse they certainly have a place to overwinter 'em.
Must be hard on the plants though!
Let us know the link if the landscaping company has a website.
Not begonias or impatiens? now I'm curious.

Barb - the red flowers in the first picture are red begonias. They are nice looking , but nothing compared to the beauty of the red flowers in pic 2 (at least in person).
Dean - the red flowers I write of are located in the foreground of pic 2. They have looked fabulous all summer lon. That spot of the corner faces the southwest and those palms (look hard you can see wash filifera), bananas and elephant ears take a heat beating each and every day and still look great. I WANT THOSE RED FLOWERS.
Have I made myself clear?

Kent...bet they haven't counted them 😆 😆
I'd take a box of doughnuts into the business and (pleasantly) tell them that I'd like to very carefully dig out one of their little red flower plants.
Bet they'd say "go for it".

Barb - now your thinking. I must be getting old beacuse I shoul have thought of that. I think I will go after dark in dark clothes, forget about the doughnuts and just dig up the whole row. 😆 Seriously I believe in eating doughnuts not giving them away.

Yes, you can do that or take cuttings off of them. 😆 Save the donuts. 😆 😆 😆
Kent, I knew the bushes/ flowers you were talking about. What I meant to say was, I didn't know what they were from the photo.

Barb - Those red flowers just may be a hybrid begonia called "dragon wing begonia red". I have done a little research. I have to get close to them and grab a couple of leaves and stems and flowers to know for sure. I am going on Saturday or Sunday this weekend to make an up close and personal visit. I apologize for ever doubting your plant recognition skills.
THANKS for playing along with my silly game.

OP, I know last year the new mall out by the race track had some BIG Roebies. Are they there this year again?
It would make more sense to me to pot plant them into larger pots each year if they aren`t already doing so. There must be more than a few double takes as people drive by. The landscaper must have many calls about getting some palms from the company.

Wes - I have not been out to that area in a couple of years. If I make it our there in the next month or so I'll look around and see what I can find.
The two roebi's in the picture are in big containers and then the plants grow up around them to hide the containers. The big Wash Filiferas in the birm (not pictured) are not in pots. They use a front end loader with a chain to pick up and set the filiferas in the holes. It is quite a process. I am with you though it makes much more sense to plant in progressively larger containers. I am guessing that may be the way of the future for this landscaping firm.
