Adonidia Merrillii - about 6' tall, with 2 emerging fronds. hopefully we'll end the summer about 7 foot tall.
Wodyetia Bifurcata (Foxtail) palm. about 6' tall with 2 emerging fronds. It kind of blends into the trees in the background , so its hard to see , but this is one of my favorite palms (at this point)
Cham Hooperiana - this has been a great indoor palm. It sits in an east facing window all winter and loves every minute of it. It is just about bullet proof. i.e. not picky about water, light, fertiliizer, no bugs, no nothing. If you look at the base of the Hooperiana palm there 2 sabal minors and a trachy fortunei planted in ground that overwintered in that spot last winter. They had clear plastic 6ml plastic over the top of them and 6" of leaf mulch. No heat. They are all 2 year old seedlings and temps dropped to 0F (-17C) on 2 occassions. They really survived winter with little or no damage. They are just slow growing at this stage. I'll probably take better care of them next winter.

OP that Adonidia Merrillii looks WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!
Sheesh, Kent, all your stuff is gorgeous 🙂
That foxtail is especially beautiful because of its balanced fronds.
great adonidia and cham.h.
re the 2 yr old seedlings that survived -17C. 6ml plastic (presumably on a frame?) then covered totally with 6 inches of leaves (to keep the sun from frying them through the plastic?).
Great method.
Is your yard sheltered from damaging winter winds?
Thanks for these pics too!

Thanks Wes. The Adonidia Merrilli is very healthy right now.
Barb- I put little chicken wire/poultry netting rings around each seedling. The chicken wire is probably 8" tall, filled with leaves and grass. built a make shift wooden structure (about 2 foot tall) over the palms and draped 6ml plastic over the entire thing, secured the ends with rocks and bricks and maybe another foot of mulch (grass and chopped leaves) around the edges and left it on all winter through early spring. The seedlings are protected on the north side by a 4 foot tall slatted fence. There is definite wind protection but its not a solid fencing. I should have taken some pictures of what I did last winter, but I really thought it was just a crap shoot and if they lived that would be great, if not I would get more. Lucky me.

Wes,
I may try your winter system with the Trachy Nainital I got from Barrie.
I don't want to dig it out of the ground (like I've done with the big Trachy).
Seems to like its spot, and hey, what the hell, time to test its winter resilience.
I'll do the chicken wire and leaves and plastic thingy too this winter.
I still wish you had taken some pics of the winter protection.
We're all interested (remember????)
I think your fence--although slotted--is enough of a microclimate that it got through -17C.
Well done. Hey, now there are two of us that're Lucky! 😆 😆 😆 😆

oppalm (Kent) ... Those are great potted palms 😀 Real fresh and healthy looking with plenty of vigor!!! Your collection far exceeds mine as I tend to grow only those palms that will make winters here (even the odd one that needs a leg up).
Cheers, Barrie.
Kent your definetly doing everything right as your plants look great. Have your neighbors caught the palm bug yet? Thanks for posting the pics.

Thanks for the comments.
Barb - I will re create my winter protection in an upcoming pictoral just for you (and all the other cold hardy palm enthusiasts). I have everything I need. The fence does create a micro climate no doubt about it. You should also know that my neighbor has arborvitae's on the other side of the fence which are probably 4 foot tall and I am sure help with regulating temps.
Barrie - When I first got into plams about 3 years ago I bought too much tropical stuff that requires too much winter space. I have since started to buy more cold hardy palms and will test the limits outdoors. My tropical palms overwinter in the house with most of them spending winter in a basement bedroom that has been converted to an indoor greenhouse.
John - the neighbors have not caught the palm bug. In fact I am pretty sure they think I am a nut. Although I get a lot of nice comments from neighbors I work pretty hard at it and most of my neighbors call me "yard man" because of the amount of time I spend in the yard goofing around with my plants and grass and flowers and trees and shrubs, etc. It keeps me busy and thats how I relax.
