I waited to see if my largest W. filifera 5 years old from seed would regrow it`s spear since May . A shame it had to come to this. I was hoping it was going to be like my Butia c. and recover on it`s own. No luck. I got the saw out today. The first cut was about three quarters of the trunk and got "rot".Cut again almost to the base of the trunk finally found some white growth. Weird thing is it looks like it was already going to shoot out the side of some old frond boots pic # 7 nand #8. There is only another six weeks of growing weather. I think if it is to make it I`ll see growth from the side of the trunk within the next 3 weeks. I have sprayed it before and after with 3% hydrogen peroxide and copper fungicide. This was my biggest palm from seed so here`s hoping. Any advice?

John,
That's pretty tough call to make looks like you made the right one. The only thing you can do is hope for the best and keep it dry I guess. The rest of the leaves looked so good what do you think happened to it?

Hope it comes through for you.

Bill

Thanks guys. At first the spear was a little brown on one side so I sprayed with Hydrogen peroxide weekly. It should have been moved under cover as we had a wet spring. The spear finally pulled end of June. This is the first spear pull on any of the Washy`s that I have. I`ll have to keep a closer watch on the rest next spring.

I think Washingtonia is a more challenging palm than it gets credit/blame for. --Erik

Filiferas are know to be a pain in the ass with moisture, plus they need bigger and bigger pots all the time or they sulk. Filibusta is the way to go for the best of both worlds. You must have some of them right John?

Ah, what a shame John...and from seed!

Looking at your photos reminded me of sawing down the Butia capitata (one of my favs) until there was nothing left.
I hope it comes back for you at one of the boots (do they do that?????)

Looking forward to seeing you two on Monday!
I've got lots of beer.

Bill thanks for your reply. I dropped the ball on my most prized W. filifera. "If" this ever happens again I will be on the lookout for tell tale signs of spear rot!Barb.I have no clue if the newest "white" growth coming out will turn into a new spear. I prefer to look at as it was last summer. http://okanaganpalms.multiply.com/photos/album/8/Pub_BananasPalms#photo=4

Three point five years from SEED? Wow, that was a lot of growth!
I do hope it comes back for you.

Great pictures on that link. Was that at McMaster's Pub?

Mystery plants? 😆 😆
...and don't forget to bring a 5 gallon pot (I don't have any) to take the nana home.

See you Monday.
