Most palms had to be moved into shade of patio roof as soon as the heat hit.
Exception is the CIDP, which is pushing 3 new fronds.
Below is the Reed/Bamboo Palm, which needs almost total shade in our hot/dry desert windy site.
It suffered for a while but is sending some shoots.
Below is the Chinese Fan, sending out a lot of fronds. Falls over all the time from wind.
Below are my 3 Triangles (bunched together). They've taken a beating, lots of sunburn from 1 hour of sun in a.m.,
but pushing very long fronds finally now.
Below is the Cataractarum, whose pot is home to a frog. Nice long fronds now opening.
Lots of misting, 1 hour of sun/day.
Below is the Trachy Nainital from Barrie...the long spear is taller than the palm! and another is coming too.
Great palm, loves the heat apparently.
Below is the Spindle, whose spear has been TRYING to open since winter in the house 😕
Wrong soil pH and it cannot handle extreme dry heat. But at least another spear is coming.
Lots of sunburn, patio umbrella over it almost constantly.
And I can't believe this MIGHT have been pollinated! Had to move it last month so it gets no sun at all.
We learn til we die...or the palms die... 😆

Geez Barb ... evreything looks real healthy and enjoying your attention. You have quite a selection of palms, much more than I do. I guess I don't really have anywhere to put things that won't make a winter.
As for your Trachycarpus 'Nainital', here a pic of mine. It's the tallest one on the right, but was the smallest palm when all three where planted.
Thanks for your comments Barrie.
I've probably got too much stuff! But it's a nice hobby. 😀
Your Nainital is superb. I'm very impressed with this form of Trachy.
Definitely a keeper, and should be better known/distributed by folks selling palms.

Unless the people that picked up this early seed kept their ear to the ground, it's unlikely they really knew what they had and sold them as T. takil. When Martin Gibbons & Tobias Spanner finally cleared the air on this it was too late in many instances. Luckily I new my source and through the magic of the internet, was able to solidly conclude the identity of the palms. I've got some nice sized 5 gallon 'Nainital' down in the greenhouse waiting for good homes 😀 .
Cheers, Barrie.
Barb looks like everything is doing well. I had the same problem with my Triangle palms. I should have given them more time to adjust to full sun this spring. They seem to need more time than all my other palms. Do you have any palms set up around your business?

Okanagan Palms and Tropicals

John, my Triangles would never adjust to full sun.
They're burnt to a crisp at the ends from the 1 or 2 hours of sun they receive in the a.m.
Yup, the palms etc are here "with me".
Todd, thanks but it's a struggle.
My palms hate dry desert heat and winds.
I think they're already anticipating going back indoors.

A lot of those species can handle the kind of heat you get. You just have to be slowly climatize the palms.
They look great though. Many species you have I have never seen unless it was in a picture.

Thanks, folks.
But even in the Okanagan, there are areas that are hotter/drier/windier than other areas.
I'm afraid my palms hate this dry windy place that sucks any moisture they have.
I'm disappointed my big(ger) spindle is hating being planted (didn't photograph that one).
But Cycads seem to love the heat if they get only morning sun.
Palms are suffering big time.
And, frankly, how much time can anyone spend misting them?
I love my palms/plants, but man, oh man, keeping 'em alive is work.
When it's a "nice" 29 degrees in Kelowna or Vernon, my thermometer is registering 50C in 20 min of a.m. sun.

"When it's a "nice" 29 degrees in Kelowna or Vernon, my thermometer is registering 50C in 20 min of a.m. sun."
The ambient air temp is 29 celcius, but in the direct sun your readings are subject to the suns' intensity. Even here if my thermometer is in direct contact with the sun's rays, it goes off the scale.
Always take shade temps in close proximity at roughly 5' above ground level to get a true reading.
Cheers, Barrie.
Yup, I know, Barrie.
It just makes me realize how seldom I'm in the shade...

Tired of watching the Spindle go into decline, losing colour and vigor in that incorrect alkaline soil bed, and not opening a spear that's been 4 feet long since late winter in the house!
So....hope I didn't do too much harm by CAREFULLY digging it out of the ground today.
For a palm that looked sickly, it sure had a lot of white healthy fleshy roots. No mushy ones.
Spindle is shown below in its new blue Fiberglass palm pot (23" tall, 12" diameter), with soil mix of fir bark, leaf mold, some pine needles, potting soil, 2 inches of gravel over drain hole.
3 Triangles also went into their Fiberglass pots (16" tall, 8" diameter). The ends are so sunburnt from only an hour or two of sun in the morning! But lots of new fronds coming.
I'm sure there'll be some transplant shock, but hope that the more acidic pH will offset its months-long decline.
Here's the top of the Spindle: Only hours later, the colour already looks improved.

nice work barb. those palm pots look pretty cool. your plam trees look great. I would think those palm pots would blow over in the wind. Whats the story?

Thanks Kent.
That occurred to me too when I was transplanting.
So I added 10 pounds of rocks over the drain hole before the soilmix.
First time I've used these pots. Label says "Fiberglass collection: stronger and lighter than clay or ceramic planters, waterproof and weatherproof, won't break if it freezes, ideal for indoor/outdoor use; crack, chip and fade resistant, made of heavy-duty fiberglass with reinforced cast resin."
It'll be interesting to see how long these last.
