Following are a couple of T Fortuneis. The one on the left I have had for 3 years and I bought it off ebay as a 2 year old seedling. So, 5 years from seed. I keep it inside in the winter time and will probably plant it in ground in the summer of 2009. The one on the right I got from Florida in Feb 2007. They both seem to do very well in a full sun location in my backyard.

a picture of my tiki bar I built in springtime 2005 which kick started my palm tree and tropical plant acquisition problems.

a picture of my pond. If you look real close you can see 2 washington robustas behind the pond on the right and left side of the birm. I'll dig those up this year and overwinter in the basement.

Hey Kent now we know why you need palms...for thatching your Tiki Bar 😆 😆
Nice project!

Your washys and trachys are a nice size.

Do you overwinter the lilypads in the basement?

My goal is to someday thatch the roof over my whole house. j/k.

The lillies stay in the pond. I cut them back to the pots, which are like 3 gallon size, and just drop them back in the pond which is 32" deep. I have 9 gold fish and 3 frogs/toads that live in the pond. Everything stays in year round. I have a small pump that I run during winter that keeps the water from freezing over. The pond is 3 years old.

Kent, your dear wife would kill if you thatched the house roof 😆 😆

You said earlier your area hit -17C 0F a couple of times...the pond pump is effective at those temps?
I've wanted lilies for the pond but heard they had to be lifted EVERY winter as they couldn't handle temps anywhere near freezing. Seems the nursery was wrong. 😕

Mine are cold hardy lillies. I got them from my brother in law 3 years ago and they have been growing ever since. My regular pond pump pushes 1300 gallons per hour. In the winter I use a 250 Gallon per hour pump that sits on a ledge pushes the water straight up and breaks the surface without too much turbulence. perfect for winter. The surface may freeze but the turbulence will leave a 6" hole open in the ice. We get alot of freeze thaw cycles during the winter.

Thanks for the pond/pump explanation, Kent.
Certainly makes sense in your zone.

I've never heard of cold hardly pond lillies.
There oughta be some in Canada, of all places!
