Here is a photo of me from last week gathering seeds from a cohune palm (Attalea cohune) which I'll try to germinate.
I fear I gathered them too soon for them to be really ready. I had to pull hard to get them off.

Barb,
thanks!
I'll try that, as I really want to get one of these to grow.
The most useful website I've found on these is:
http://www.floridata.com/ref/A/atta_coh.cfm
which says they are Zone 9 hardy in Florida. I like my potted palms to be able to take a little frost as we get unexpected frosts in the shoulder season when they are already/still outside.
These guys grow enormous leaves even when young and don't have a trunk, which would be great.
It doesn't hurt that they are one of W's favorite palms....

Erik,

Good link, wow, 33 foot long fronds...backscratchers for the horses 😆 😆

I'm only guessing at the seeds' lack of maturity.

Presume you have a pocketful 😉 so maybe dry/ripen a few, sow a few, try different things (a baggie for humidity, etc.) with some.
That way at least some will germinate.

My link said 1 seed was inside, your link says 1-3 seeds are inside.

Interesting that the trunk stays buried for years, allowing the palm your requirement for frost tolerance.

It'll be interesting to see which process pops 'em.

I grabbed 10 of the fruits.
It was a struggle, as the trunks on mature palms are so tall I would have needed a ladder. I got these as I was driving along a dirt road on a steep hillside. This palm fruited with a relatively short trunk, but they key thing was the trunk was downslope from the road. So, I did a U-turn, parked the rental Chevy tracker on the shoulder (such as it was), and used my height (I'm 6'4") to get them.
I'll take your suggestion to experiment. I have two plant growth chambers at work I can use. Right now I have a mini-experiment going: 16 Sabal "Birmingham" seeds at 35oC and 16 at 25oC. I also have Sabal minor seeds at home, some in a ziploc bag and some in 4" pots on the fireplace mantle. I'll could try a couple cohunes in each condition.
I'll entertain any suggestions on how to increase germination success....

Maybe someone else will chime in here.

Erik,
I really don't have much experience growing palms from seeds yet but if I could offer one suggestion that "might" be helpful.
It's a little bit of a upfront cost but if you can moderate the day and night temperatures to simulate actual conditions using a
programmable outlet it you "might" have good results. There around 30 bucks for a lux 100.

Isn't it nice to be tall! You can always reach the best fruits on the trees that others just can't reach 😆 😆 😆 I'm 6'4"
too.
