Well ... as a procrastinator I put this off long enough. The 15 gallon pot was splitting apart under the root pressure so I finally planted this Brahea edulis today. The palm is roughly the same height as I am (close to 6' tall). Here's a few photos to document the event.

Cheers, Barrie.

Barrie,
Nice looking palm. Did you get it from Tropi-Cole?
Are you planning any winter protection?
You will have to keep us informed on how it does at your place.
I have been too scared to buy one however my brahea armata seems to be able to handle our weather without any problems.

Hey Wes ... I pick this up about 5 years ago through my contact with Len at Sunnyside. I do plan on a winter protection method, although it's never been given any specail attention outside of the unheated coldframe. I'll likely devise a simple canopy once the fronds have been gathered together.

Cheers, Barrie.

Barrie nice looking B.edulis. Did you have to cut the pot to get it free? I don`t imagine their are to many of those around Lantzville and Nanaimo area.

Barrie,
Are the roots on an edulis as sensitive as armata?
When I planted my armata I was very careful not to disturb the roots. It made out fine but I have heard you can kill an armata during transplanting or even removing it from a pot.

very nice palm. Sure wish I was there to help dig the hole (not really). Must have been fun to lift that out of the container and into the planting hole. Nice job. Great looking palm.

Hey thanks for all the great comments but as I always say, the plants speak for themselves. Wes, the roots are sensitive so all I did was cut the top 4 inches off the pot, cut a few slits in the wall of the container and planted it that way. The roots will escape on their own free will as they seem to be doing anyway at the time of planting.

Here's a couple more shots that show the detail in the crown.
Cheers, Barrie.

Barrie, that's a real beauty.
That pot was bursting 🙂
It'll really take off now that it has a good spot!
