Here are two photos taken in my garden from the same vantage point. The first pic is from May 2003 and the second 5½ years later, Oct. 2008. The ony new planting is the Brahea edulis seen in the foreground, everything else is unchanged.

The only slouch in the fray would be Musa basjoo from the original pic. It's now crowded out and in a great deal of shade, only reaching deck height these days.
