Awesome plantings !!! Such variety and texture with plenty of color. Hey why vacation when you can do it at home 😆

Cheers, Barrie.

Great looking yard! 8) Do you let all of your bananas stay outside overwinter?

i am impressed. nice work. looks great. Your bananas are big. do you overwinter those in the greenhouse?

How much of the stuff do you dig up and keep in the greenhouse?

Kent in Kansas
where it's cold in winter (always)
and hot in summer (usually)

This is my second year grwing bananas. Last year I tried over wintering the corms in the ground and didn't have success. The corms rotted in the wet ground. All of the bananas in the picture were started from new plantings in the spring from small (1') plants.

This fall I will dig up the plants and seperate the pups to keep in the greenhouse and will attempt to force the big plants into a semi dormancy and keep in the basement. I found a link that explains this.

I have a combination of bajoo's and some edible bananas. My experience has been that the bajoo's grow much quicker and develop huge stalks. The bajoo's during the heat of summer were putting on a new leaf every two days and still are putting one on every three days. I fertilize weekly with a high nitrogen fertilizer and water daily.

Growing conditions were really great this year weren't they!
The thing I liked was that there was hardly any wind storms. I have a hard time growing bananas (in fact I quit trying last year) because I either kill them for no appearant reason, or the wind breaks them.

Great job!

Hi David and Cathy
Enjoyed our visit the other day.
Your backyard really looks happy and tropical, you weren't kidding when you said you were into bananas, your cannas look great as well.
Good luck with overwintering everything,It's tough when you have to start out with small plants and try to make them grow
fast and big,but you've done a great job this summer.
Don
