A nice mild spring day so I thought I'd grab my camera and shoot a few pics around my garden, Las Palmas Norte here in Lantzville, Vancouver Island.
Washingtonia robusta.
Phoenix canariensis and Chamaerops humilis (left)
Acacia rubida (about to bloom)
Grevellia 'Canberra Gem' (days away from blooming)
Brahea armata (forground) and Butia capitata (back ground)
Heleborous in bloom
Butia capitata crown
Butia trunk (18" diameter)

Barrie always nice to see your yard with those palms. How old is that W.robusta and the B.armata in the pics? Do they get a rain cover in the winter?Cold tolerance?

Beautiful Butia capitata Barrie, what was your lowest temperature this winter? The Butia looks like it is in perfect condition.

Your Robusta looks untouched by Winter and that Butia is great! 8)

Both the Washingtonia robusta and Phoenix canariensis had enclosures this winter. This kept the rain out of the crown and provided shelter during a cold snap in November 06. I used a bungee cord to gather the Washingtonia fronds together and made it easy to wrap burlap during that cold snap. P. canariensis was only covered for rain and snow. No further protection provided. John ... I have no idea how old both my W. robusta and Brahea armata are. Both where planted as 15 gallon sized palms.
Butia capitata and Brahea armata are almost never fussed over. Buckects of rain in the winter, wind, frost, snow. I do tuck some dry burlap in the crown only during the worst weather, so rather infrequently. This winter my lowest was -6.9 (19.6f) in late Nov. and another cold snap in Jan we saw about -5c (23f). Typically we get two cold spells like this in winter.
Laaz ... I wondering if that Butia might send infloresence this year. We'll need some warmer temps than we're getting now to have that happen. Barb the Helleborus is very rich in color. Not sure what the cultivars name is though.

I am puzzled as to why you can grow these species and barely protect them and yet your temps are exaclty the same. I know in Jan 2004 I didn't get as cold as you but your palms survive. I even have spear pull on my c. humilis. It has to be the amount of rain I get compared to you that makes the difference.
What are your thoughts?
