Laaz ... You should get a hold of some Cordyline australis seed. It's fairly cheap as far as seeds go and probably even free if you put the word out on the different forums. They're very fast growing and should get to 6' in just a few years. They're a funny plant really. I've seen examples of them being cold damaged while others right next to them are unharmed. I'm not sure how well adjusted they are to the prolonged heat and humidity of the SE. Perhaps that's why they're not grown so much there. Either way, I think they'd be a good looking, inexpensive tropical around Charleston or any growable regions in S. Carolina.

Arctic palm...You can grow those here in S/Ontario in pots and then garage them when the temps drop below -5C..

I have 2 eight footers and they are awesome...Last year they stayed outside till the Jan 15 freezeup...!

Its not coastal BC but...you just have to work a little harder..lol...
