I took some pics yesterday of some of my cacti, yuccas etc. Looks like like 98% survival for all of my cacti and yuccas. 😀 Here's a few pics.

Unknown agave. No winter protection.

Regards,
Jay

Wow! Your basilaris looks completely untouched!
More amazing, however, is that Agave... How long has it been seeing temps above 10C? I ask because I had an A. lechuguilla that look great in April and early May last year only to turn to mush in the first week with really high temps! Hopefully yours will be fine... I can't even take a guess at which species it is, or wheter it 'should' be hardy!

You need to get Agave parryi, utahensis, and neomexicana planted ASAP!

Cheers,
an Impressed Paul

Jay all of your desert plants look great. The warm temps seemed to have helped. Do you have any pics of your palms?

Thanks guys. 😀

That basilaris is a tough one. It looked the same after the winter before this one. 🙂 We have been seeing temps that warm for around the last two weeks. If you guys want a pad of it this spring just let me know.

I do have some A. parryi seedlings that i'm going to plant when it warms up some more. 😀

John, I don't have any palms in the ground yet. I'm going to put one of those washingtonias you gave me into the ground this summer. 😀

Regards,
Jay

Jay,
Love those pics.
I have a question for you (or anybody else). I am wanting to dig up a wild growing cacti to send to Mr. Chumley. Being at my work in the field, I saw this and thought he would like it. My problem is, how do I dig it up? Do I dig deep and get all the dirt with the roots, or are cacti tough and will live without dirt on the roots for awhile or what? Thanks.

Thanks Kansas. Do you know what type of cactus it is? If it's the pad type (opuntia) you can just break the pads off and send them like that.

Very nice. I would post a ic of my desert but it is still all white.

Thanks Allen. Don't tell me you still have snow on the ground?

Jay

Oh yeah. I got back from Vegas to find about 4" more snow on the ground. The wind had caused snow drifts in the 'desert' that were up to 2' high.

It was 8*C yesterday and is forecast to reach 6*C today. I hope to be able to see the yuccas and cacti before nightfall.

Your desert plants loom great.
I finally got around to planting my cacti garden.
I am still nervous about planting my agave in the ground with all of th rain we get. I might try it this year.

Thanks Wes. Good start on your cacti garden. How is the opuntia pad I sent you doing? What if you had a cover for the agave to keep the winter rain off? Should do fine then.

Jay

It is OK. I have kept it inside but it fell over and can not stand on it's own. Not sure what has happened. It did grow numerous pads last summer, perhaps it is still too small to support all of the new pads.

That's why I didn't plant it outside yet. I will once it recovers, if it does. I was also concerned about the height it grows to. I don't want anything too tall in front of my window. I guess I could cut the pads off if it got too tall. Cacti don't seem to mind having their pads removed.

Yeah, That cacti doesn't grow very high. Just spreads out. You can take the pads off. It won't hurt it at all.

Jay

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.
