Hi All,

Was in Las Vegas last week with my wife. Had a chance to visit Red Rock Canyon just west of the city, in the Mojave Desert. If you don't know, it's a conservation area run by the Bureau of Land Management. It is also a paradise and a must for the yucca enthusiast! Please have a look at my photo gallery. It was really neat to be there on a rare gloomy winter's day. We made it up to the snow line that day. The temp. wasn't too far above freezing.

In the images you'll see several species, including yucca brevifolia, schidigera and baccata. Also, some cholla cactus (Cylindropuntia fulgida) and I think a lovely juniper or pinon pine. As well, a shot from our hotel's beautiful desert landscaping, the Aria (part of MGM's new multi-hotel City Center project-what a place!)

Thanks for looking!

Duncan, ooooh, those yuccas... 😀
Thanks for the beautiful photos, including great rock formations as background. Stunning desert!

It must have been tempting to buy a shovel...

Great landscaping at your hotel.
Longing for a couple of those...

Thanks Guys!

Yeah Barb, amazing yuccas. They've got some great nurseries in Vegas too. I wanted to stock up!

Barb, wow, Washys planted out already! What a winter you guys are having!...and on the coast, the worst they've had is like -2 Celsius-I think that's a zone 10 winter!

Those are some nice yuccas! If I lived in a arid climate I would be growing them for sure.

Duncan, yes, this'll go down in the books as a "little winter" for sure.
Anybody still heading over to the Olympics from Alberta should take a bucket of snow and some ice cubes.
They could use it.

Bill, I'm planting all my potted yuccas out this year, including the Joshua.
And this time next year, it'll look like I'm growing inverted garbage cans.
😆

Have you come up with a plan of attack yet or are you going to wing it?

Yeah, I love the Nevada desert. I still have pics from a couple years ago I need to post.
Lots of yuccas in the little towns we stayed at.

If I'm not too lazy i'll take some pics this weekend of my yuccas. 🙂

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Utah juniper-good to know, thanks. It was very lush with blue berries-nice tree.

How have your J-trees managed this winter?

I love Utah junipers, they are grand old trees.

PS The j-trees are doing great! too bad I can't say the same for other plants in the yard. 😡
