Despite the rotten weather, had to get plants out of the cold building for some fresh air.
Now they can croak outside 😆 😆
A few pics:
My carpenter-hobby daughter built me this massive potting bench.
A great place to put seedling pots.

The Washies have been uncovered/unheated for about a week.
This one looks bad:
<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7074149439/" title="005 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="480" height="640" alt="005"></a>
The second Washy looks better:
<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7074149339/" title="004 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="480" height="640" alt="004"></a>
This yucca rostrata isn't doing as well as the other two:
<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7074149447/" title="006 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="480" height="640" alt="006"></a>
And.....ta da.....drumroll .... ONE star magnolia bud expanding:
<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7074149467/" title="007 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="480" height="640" alt="007"></a>
This Chamaerops humilis "cerifera" hasn't done well since I cut the suckers off last Fall.
Probably a mistake doing that.
<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6928065088/" title="010 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="480" height="640" alt="010"></a>
Thank goodness for ONE success story...the Trachy.
Loves this cool cloudy weather.
<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6928065018/" title="009 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="480" height="640" alt="009"></a>
Going to be crowded at the top:
<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6928065010/" title="008 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="480" height="640" alt="008"></a>

Nice! That first Washy and the rostrata will be fine, as you know. Tell the Trachy to enjoy the weather while it lasts!
I think everything looks good! Nice job on the winter trials. 😉
Shoshone Idaho weather

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.
-Aaron-
Nice potting bench.
Keep us updated on Washy and the rostrata.
Hi Barb,
your Washy's are beauties! I really like all the filaments. I wonder how many leaves they will grow in your climate.......keep us updated.
I planted one out in 2004 and it grew this much in one season here.
November of same season:
Following spring............protection was not enough.
Your Y. rostratas will likely take off this season.........keep the photos coming.
Your Mags are just opening while ours will likely be gone in a couple more days. Many of ours looked pretty bad this year since a freeze browned many of the buds/petals.
Your big Trachy looks great.........your hubby will need to file a zoning permit since your palm hut structure will exceed the building height codes! 😆 And make sure he places a blinking light on top of the hut so planes don't fly into it. 😀

Looks great Barb. Happy Spring!

PS Tim, my yuccas you sent me are hanging in there...I will send pics soon.

Your Washys look fine.....
Mine were burned all around the edges- the leaves were to close to the protection.
I can't believe the difference in spring growth from one area to another,
those Mags have been done here for weeks!

Mags done here, too, this year. Azaleas are tapering off, and a neighbour's Campsis radicans in in bloom already!
Sure don't have to pretend its spring here in OK: tornadoes all around. (Not here, but lots of rain and wind.)

Right! Such diversity....And we are supposed to get to 89 degrees tomorrow 🙄

Barb, i agree your plants look good enough for their first winter they came trough. You will enjoy your blooming magnolias for sure...

Thanks folks, but I think they look like crap considering the protection they had.
Oh well, that's just me...
Tim, thanks for those pics...I'm stunned to see how much growth you got in that one season on a Washy!!!!
Must be planted over the septic tank 😆 😆
The next year--after severe browning--did it croak, or come back eventually?
We're supposed to drop down to 0C 32F AGAIN in a day or two, cold winds here even when it's sunny.
👿 👿
I'm living vicariously through YOUR nice warm temperatures...(but shivering here) 😆

Sorry about your cold spell Barb..........our heat = your cold. We are suppose to hit 85F tomorrow. 8)
I protected that Washy during the 2004-2005 winter in a pile of leaves and covered the top with 6 mil plastic to keep it dry.......I didn't use any lights. It died and didn't come back. I need some form of supplemental heat especially when they are so small.

2004-2005 winter
Ah, too bad it didn't pop back.
What's the mortality in the foreground? (Chamaerops?)
Looked liked a nice one.
Thanks, Mike, and happy spring to you too...(is this spring?) :smurf:

Hi Barb,
the dead palm in the front is a Coryota 'himilaya'. It fried the first hardy freeze.....not hardy at all when young.
