Mike..............the Tetrapanex 'steroidal giant' and Hardy gingers all survived last winter........that was their first winter which was our 2nd warmest on record...............low of 5F with no sustained cold days. The gingers are planted against a house foundation wall which has a basement..............so this area may not get deep freezes..................which is likely the key to their success. This season the Tetrapanex trunk is about 5 feet tall so I built a cage around it..............it has a string of xmas lights along the trunk and filled with leaves too. We'll see how it looks in spring............it appears we will be getting some normal cold for the next three weeks with several lows close to 5F. This winter may end up colder than last winter so it will be a good test. Tetrapanex is such a fast grower...........it will probably grow huge in your area if sited in a warm microclimate. I'm not too sure how hardy the trunk is........it may tolerate zone 8 temps??? Leaves will fry below 30F.
