Had a call from friends to come over and get one palm seed they'd brought home from Cuba. 😆

Soaking in insecticide with fruit intact in case there's a crawly in there.

Trying to narrow down ID...maybe a Roystonea, but their seeds are small.
Maybe a Copernicia? Acrocomia?

Probably an aborted Cocos 😆 😆

Any ideas?

My guess is Cocos. Would love to go to Cuba for palm seed research, but my Govt frowns on that. 😆

Friends just emailed a couple of photos of the tree where they picked up the seed.

<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6934049599/" title="Cuba 2012 221 (2) by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="640" height="480" alt="Cuba 2012 221 (2)"></a>

<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6934049595/" title="Cuba 2012 220 (2) by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="480" height="640" alt="Cuba 2012 220 (2)"></a>

It does resemble a Cocos, with fruit at (not below) the crownshaft.

My palm encyclopedia has a whole bunch that look like this one :banghead:

but my Govt frowns on that

Yeah, Erik, curious about that...is that ever going to end? that was the Cold War era, 60 years ago.
Friends said they had a great time, the residents were very friendly and kind.

We need some Canadian members of PN to go to Cuba and take palm photos for those of us stuck in the U.S.
Sid will pay you back with photos from Florida, and me from Belize 😆

Have fun! W & I went to NOLA in March a couple years ago. Stayed in the Garden Quarter (duh!) and were astonished at how well the plants looked then.

Cuba does sound interesting, but from what I've heard don't get sick down there.
Shortages of medicine, plus peeling paint on hospital walls, etc.
Yet the people take it all in stride apparently, and are so friendly to travellers.

Our other friends who were RVing in Arizona last winter are heading to southern Europe in March for a few months.
Already planning my seed request...

16 feet of salt water didn't do much harm to the palms, Erik?
And we're told not to overwater... 🙄

Always love the pics from your trips Mike! 😀

Sent the pics to Phil at Jungle Music (THE authority on palms 😀 )

Definitely an aborted Cocos seed. 👿
Good guess Erik!

But he said I should try it anyway.
Will pass. 😆
