It's my first test of the new underwater camera (it was actually my daughter that made the video) and my first upload to youtube. I was waiting to create a better one, but no time and now the fall is almost here and the garden doesn't look that nice anymore.

It's mostly about my pond, but you can see in the background some of the palms, bananas and other plants I have.
(i was thinking if this is the right section to post this message, as it's not quite a picture but it's not wild life either. maybe we need a videos section).

I hope you enjoy.

Very cool!
Great cinematography. I've admired Scotty's, but when I went to make a garden video myself I realized how hard it is to tell a story with video. Your daughter's video tells a story about the relationship of the koi pond to the garden that is not at all obvious. I bet you see your garden differently after seeing this.

Might have thought somebody dropped the camera in the water if you
wouldn't have warned us 😀

I like the way we get to see a whole new world, one of quite as we go underwater-
I was also impressed with how clear the picture was, even when suddenly coming back
up to the "surface".

I kind of miss not having a pond,Koi were always fun to watch, esp after a long winter-
to see them hanging out on the bottom.

Nice job on the pond.

There are two topics here and I hate to mix them - but I will.

One is about the garden, the pond, fishes and plants. There is nothing that compares with a morning or evening sitting by the side of the pond listening to the sound of the waterfall and looking at the nanas and palms (if it's evening a drink helps for sure). It's like Bahamas (neve been there, but I can only imagine) not Markham Ontario.

The second topic is technology; It's amazing what you can do now. This is just a point and shoot camera that can also make movies. 10 years ago to be able to make an underwater movie you had to spend a ton of money. Now anybody can do it, and youtube will host it for free.

But if you have nothing to film, all the technology is useless. I'll watch the pictures and the movies in January when there will be 3 feet of snow on top of everything 🙂

Thank you again for looking.

Tavi,

Great video your daughter shot...am also impressed with the picture quality as camera goes in and out of the water.
Nice job of the pond and plantings, nice variety too.

I've got water hyacinths, what are your water plants called? (not the egyptian papyrus...the floating ones that look like lettuce).
My water hyacinths are spreading like crazy.
Started with 4, now there must be 200, but it does keep the fish safe from most predators.

Lots of Koi you have! Do you keep pond heated in winter? or bring the fish inside the house?

Will look at the video again to view your container plants.
Thanks for posting your video!

Barb,

I have a lot of water hyacinths but I try to keep them in the filter. The other one it's called water lettuce.
http://www.google.ca/images?hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENCA313&q=water+lettuce&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=zpuSTO39CovFnAfhjLWhBw&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCMQsAQwAA&biw=1129&bih=710
I got three of each in the spring from walmart, and they multiply like crazy.

The fish (there are around 20 of them, both koi and gold fish) stay in the water during the winter. I shut down the water and keep a small doughnut like heater on the ice, not to heat the water but to keep a hole in the ice.
this one: http://www.pondsonlinecanada.com/misc11.htm
They need the hole so the toxic gases can escape, if not they will poison the water.
This would be the third winter and I did not loose any fish so far (in the middle of the winter there is more than a foot of ice on top of the pond). The secret is to make the pond 4' or deeper. Mine is almost 5'.

For the last two years I had a commercial filter and I always had problems with green water, but this year I build a biological filter myself and the water is crystal clear. (this is an older picture, now both the filter and the waterfall are full of plants. also the commercial filter that I removed is in the back)

and some more fishes:

Tavi,
again, beautiful garden.
I agree about enjoying it. My friends who live in apartments always want to "go out." I always want to "go home" after work. Every morning I drink coffee and watch the sun come up, and each evening I drink a beer or glass of wine and watch the sun set.
After seeing your video and photos, I'm thinking of a little pond. I have the pool already, plus a fish pond out back in the pasture, but maybe a little koi pond could be tucked in somewhere.....
Something fun to think about this winter.
As for technology, you are right. My garden video was taken with my cell phone and uploaded straight to YouTube. Nothing could be easier. My digital camera also takes video and oh yes is waterproof to 8'. And was cheap.
So, shall we all do garden videos in the next month, before a frost hits? --Erik

So water lettuce multiplies as rapidly as water hyacinths! good to know.

My small pond freezes over solid, with no air holes for gases to escape.
Fish make it through no problem, with one dead in all these years.
Pond is small, about 4 feet at the back, with lots of big boulders in it.
May take some boulders out just to give the fish more room to swim around 😆

Thanks for the link to that water heater doughnut.

I don't have a filter in the pond any more. The last pumpe sucked its own filter into itself and screwed everything up.
So I just add a half inch new water every two days with a hose, that puts air back into the water.
Good for you for building your own bio filter. Well done.

Your first pic today's post, what palm is that? sitting in the pond water? might be a cataractarum?

Great place you've built to sit and relax!

Erik, the day I'm moving all my patio plants back to the house, and the cold-loving palms going into the barely-heated building...I'm glad there won't be a video camera running. Usually a bit of swearing to accompany the work moving 65 plants some of them big and heavy. 🙂

Will look forward to seeing others' videos!
Barb
