those beetles do more damage than just eating pollen......they lay larvae inside the flowers/pistol which eat the flower which quickly aborts. No see...

I got some pink China last fall but didn't plant out until this spring. It's thriving......not sure how hardy it will be.

yes....try to sterilize your soil before sowing the seed......microwave, heat or purchase seed starting mix at the store which is sterile. :D
