You can buy a little thermometer big enough to check 4" soil temps at Wal-Mart...(in the kitchen section)just make sure to get the one with the right ...

The roots will grow the fastest when soil temps are over 50,they can be stunted by cold soil and rot in cold wet soil-if the plantsare outside already...
