Very hard to tell from the pic quality. My guesses would be opuntia chisoensis and agave americana.
I would live there Barb, but there wouldn't be ant washies in the yard. Maybe a few Phoenix Date palms and several hundred agave. :D

If you like the American asthe 'silver sufer' Iis a good 10 to 15 degrees more hardy. I learned by experience.
