IMO, it depends on if the sand is a quartz or silica based sand. Silica is thin and flat in structure which causes it to hold moisture between the lay...

Try bitter apple spray. It is usually sold at pet stores for animals that nip and bite. stuff tastes horrible or so my 6 year old son says.....hehehe
